| matted eyes in my 8 week old mason Hi Everybody.. This is my first time posting and Im worried. My Mason is 8 weeks old. He is such a sweetheart but has matting eyes and I dont know what to do....I tried to call the breeder i got her from since shes a vet and shes out but im worried to death.. He had matted eyes really bad at three this morning so i washed them out and he was doing great but than he took a nap and is now kinda goupy again. I gave him his first bath last night but made sure i got no soap or water on the front of his face or in his nose or eyes. Please help me if you have any ideas or suggestions. Thanks So Much!! | Is it matting with a yellowish or greenish goo? How long have you had the puppy? Is it otherwise in healthy condition? Did she give you health records? Last edited by Julz; 08-02-2005 at 07:21 AM. |

| Hey Kristy. I saw you asked this in chat, but I was away from my desk @ work. Anyway, are you talking about tear stains? Stewie has them, but they're brownish and don't get really bad at all. I'm not sure what it could be, but I would ask your vet (independent from the vet/breeder you got the puppy from). Mason is still very young so you don't really want to take any chances with it being an infection.

| It sounds like an infection to me. I could be wrong, but Muffin had an eye infection when she was just a puppy and I took her to the doctor and they gave me some kind of drops. Forgive my memory. It's been too long ago. They may have been some kind of antibiotic drops. I urge you to take your baby to the doctor ASAP. Don't mess around with their vision. Good luck. I see you're in Iola. I'm in Fort Scott. Last edited by yorkieusa; 08-02-2005 at 07:45 AM. |

| Kristy, Can't you just take your baby on a walk-in basis? Or do you really have to have an appointment each time??? Did you explain that her eyes were matted? I'd call them back and ask if I could bring her in today just to be on the safe side. |

| eyes Keep soaking them with warm water until you see the vet. You want to make sure they do not seal shut during the night..you can put a dab of vasaline on the lid..sounds awful, but a sealed eye is dangerous. You can also get Boric acid from the druggist and wash them out. In England, they have an OTC ointment called Golden Eye..I am going to see if I can get a British member to send me some. They also have a great antiseptic called TCP..I used to use it to clean ears. |

| If it is yellow or green, it is an infection. Don't feel bad about bathing your puppy, that most likely had nothing to do with it. As was already mentioned, keep the eyes cleaned with a warm wash cloth. Don't try to "dig" into the eye, just take off the matting. You will want to check on your pup during the night too and make sure you keep them as clean as possible until Thursday when the vet can take a look. I'd leave a little of the matting there on Thursday so the vet can see it. Let us know, ok? |

| Darn! I just go in most of the time, especially if a baby is sick! Sorry you can't do that, too. Good luck! Maybe it is nothing, but if it is then at least you will have done the right thing by taking her to the doctor...

| Sorry to hear about your puppy. Yellow and/or green discharge usually indicates an infection. I would just walk-in with her at your vet's office. He most likely will not turn you away - say it's an emergency. Good luck and keep us posted.

| Go to the grocery or a drug store and buy the products that they sell for humans who have dry eyes. They make a product that is an ointment type and it works really well. You can use it any time because it is not medicated. Warm some water and use cotton balls to wipe your baby's eyes. Wipe from the nose outward and DO NOT GO BACK OVER THE EYE WITH THE SAME COTTON BALL!! THROW AWAY THE BALL AND USE A FRESH WET ONE EVERY SWIPE. DRY THE EYES THE SAME WAY AND PUT THE TEAR SUBSTITUTE ON THE EYES. CAREFUL not TO TOUCH THE EYEBALL. Always wash your hands before and after you treat your baby..and do not rub your face.. I am sorry-I got right into telling you how to take care of his eyes and forgot to say that I am sorry to hear he is not well...He will be better soon.. |

| i had the same problem with buckeye a couple of years ago. the vet said the infection was probably started because of his stray hairs going in his eyes. i did just as you are doing. washing out with water and cotton balls. then the vet gave me some drops to put in his eyes a couple of times a day. he was fine in no time.
