| will not eat out of his bowl??!?!?!? Our yorkie is 4 months old, and he will not eat his food out of his bowl. He will eat it if it is on the floor or in our hands, but not from the bowl. The only time he will eat it out of the bowl is when we are not home, and then it's just a little. Anyone else have that problem? |

| Yeah Loki did that when he was that age. I've heard it a lot. Try a different bowl or a plate. We started using wide, flat bowls (like corningware) and he was OK with that. He hated the stainless steel at first. Now he will eat out of anything

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I was going to ask if it was stainless, some dogs can see their reflection, and it scares them.

| yes it is stainless. But we also used a plastic type and he won't eat out of that either. for instance now tonight he is starving because he didn't eat all day and we take his food away at 6. |

| I had a pup once that was afraid of her bowl. It was stainless steel and she could see her reflection in it. I had to change the water bowl and the food bowl. Like everyone else, I guess. Last edited by sammiz; 06-16-2008 at 07:59 PM. |

The stainless bowl may have spooked him and now he's afraid of any bowl. I would try using a plate, also, you can try placing the food in your hands before putting in on the plate so that it picks up as much of your scent as possible. Another method would be to put a piece of food in your hand, ask him to sit, and then place on his plate, and say ok. and hope he takes the bait.

| A lot of the time I have to hand feed Hot Rod his first couple of bites then he will eat out of his bowl. It's like he is wants to fiind out what is for dinner before he will eat out of his bowl!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Many dogs need the scent of the human on their food before they will eat it. If your scent is on the food they think it's safe to eat. Some dog behaviorists think this is also a way to establish yourself as alpha dog. It sounds like maybe you have already done this with your pet, and he needs your "approval" before eating. My other theory is that the water bowl doesn't reflect as well, and he's never been frightened by it. Dogs seem to remember being frightened for a long time, and you have to retrain them not to be frightened.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I feed mine off of small paper plates and just pick them up after they eat and throw away.
