| first season! Hi, I dont post much, as im rather shy, but i do try and keep up with posts Mitzy is coming up to 7mths old, and i know she is probably due her first season. What id like to know is, have any of you noticed whether they scratch more before hand. She had an itching episode in the new year, where she scratched her ear red raw, but now she just seems to be scratching everywhere. The vet did say that sometimes there skin becomes more sensitive at that time, as we couldnt find a reason for her itchy ear. Also, if she was in season, how would i know? she keeps licking herself, but i havent found any blood. Her nipples do feel raised, didnt know if that was cos she was cold! Sorry if i have posted in the wrong place! All your yorkies are gorgeous Tina |

| Hi Tina!! Mitzy is one month older than Gizzie Chavi and I'm half expecting her to have her first season any time now (our vet wants her to have a first season before spaying so I'll be glad when this is over!) - it's what a lot of vets over here still do! We also have Gypsy Rose and I knew straight away when she started her season, she was swollen underneath, bleeding a bit, licking etc but otherwise no change in her behaviour etc (which some do have appartently) - I'm no expert on this as I had four MALE dogs previously!! A friend told me that her tiny yorkie came into season and she was lucky to even know about it and this has got me worried as we have to get our Gizzie spayed asap as we are off to tour Spain early next year...she'll be mmicrochipped too and baby teeth removed. Nipples are raised but the itching doesn't sound right, probably nothing to do with an impending season? |

| I've never heard of yorkies itching pre season... Sounds like she may be alergic to something or she just may have dry skin that gets itchy in the winter time. |

| They dont scratch, but they do lick them selfs a whole lot right before they go into heat My Jess is going to be 9 months old on the 27th and she went into heat 3 weeks ago this wednesday.I thought that sheŽd go into heat almost a week before she did because she started licking her self ALOT.About a day before the bleeding started, her vulva doubled its size too. Be prepared though! lol.I have been mopping up blood spots for almost 3 weeks now and she has got blood on my couch,my bed,my dining room chairs and of course on all of us...Its a very messy stage . Her smell has also changed, although weŽve been giving her butt baths every day and bathing her ever 3 days ever since shes in heat..she still has that bloody smell about her which isnt nice either.Im seriously thinking about getting her spayed |

| Ahia is in her heat cycle right now. She is 9 months old. I am hoping it doesn't last long. i keep a diaper on her with a womans panty liner kotex. i have had no problems with her spotting on anything. Buckeye on the other hand won't leave her alone so i have to keep a belly band on him. so they are doubly protected against a pregnancy. I have been washing her off everytime i change her pad. and i also use the pad on Buckeye's band. once in a while letting him go without to "air him out".

| Thanks for your experiences. I did think that maybe cos its a bit colder, we do have the heating notched up a bit, so maybe it is drying her skin out. My hubby says she cant be in heat just yet, cos if she was anything like me, she would be biting everyone, and be really grumpy! Tina xx |

| This has been such great info on "being in season". Schatzie being almost 9 months now from what I can see has not come in yet. She however is licking a lot, much much more than she normally does but I have yet to see any bleeding. From what I have read from the above posts I can expect it any day. I wanted to get her spayed soon but she is having surgery this friday for something else and the vet said he will not spay her while she is under since it would be too much on her. I don't want her to go through two surgeries in one year so Im guessing I will wait till next year. WOW - that could be a lot of heat cycles that I will be experiencing with her!! But I guess I am just too afraid to have double surgeries. |

| Hiya, i dont blame you for not having double surgery, it just wouldnt be fair on her. The important thing is the surgery she has on friday is for health reasons, whereas being in season is nature! I will look into getting mitzy spayed, but will wait now til she has had her season. I think i may be taking a trip to the vets after reading your last post. Last week mitzy was walking on three legs, we presume she had jumped off the sofa and landed funny, but i have noticed that sometimes when she stands still she holds one of her back legs up, so i will look into getting it checked......so you have equally given some good info with your posts too. | I hope Mitzy will be ok. We at first thought Schatzie just maybe sprained her leg or something after she began walking on 3 legs. Two weeks later we saw no improvement and the leg she favored really began losing muscle tone, felt soggy and week. X-ray's proved something differant. Keep us posted on Mitzy and how she is doing in a few days. If you see no improvement in a few days I think you are doing the right thing by taking her in. It's amazing because had Schatzie not started carrying her leg and not using it I would have never known. She still runs, plays, eats very well and does not whimper or cry. But again, I hope Mitzy's outcome is not serious. Thanks |
