| became a stinker at one year! Am I alone. Our darling , well behaved puppy has turned on us. HE was a joy to train. He knows lots of cues. He hasnt ever bothered the things in our home. He is not a barker. He loves to play alone and with us. HE is cuddly as can be... But wait!!! IT seemed over night. HE gets into any garbage. He chews on whatever he wants. HE runs out the door. He plays if he fleels like it. Works for treats if he feels like it. The biggest thing basically is that he Rummages and puts things into his mouth and he didnt used to. Our garbage cans are now all where he cannot get near them. He is so sweet , but such a stinker that i am worried abouthis safety. Is this what is suppsed to happen at 1 year???

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Has he been neutered? This sounds more like teenage behavior than little boy behavior.

| Yes he has been neutered. He has been trained also...not that a refresher course wouldnt help. I am still wondering if I am alone. Nothing has changed in the household that he would be reacting to. hmmm. If it were teenage behavior.. how long would it last ( average) since he is neutered??? thanks

| I definately think he has hit his rebellion teenage years! my boys did that around 9 months to about a year old. They ran out the door all the time. Chewed up everything in sight! He'll outgrow it Im sure!

| I am glad to hear it may be a phase. That chewing on anything is frightening. He already had surgery on his esophagus when a treat bone he was chewing on broke and lodged. IT embedded itself and caused a wound. It took two months to heal and He still gags when he eats even though we mash it . We stillhave non edible dog chews for him to chew on that he likes...but he chooses the house now to look for stuff! yikes. Thanks ladies!

When you said that he runs out the door, I thought maybe he hadn't been neutered. Once they get in a garbage can, they are going to want to do it again and again, it's a highly rewarding activity, so the best thing to do is what you did, put it away. Yorkies are highly independent dogs, and do seem to have to be in the "mood" to respond to certain things, like performing their tricks, or at least be very hungry. As far as the chewing goes, I used "bitter apple" spray when Joey was younger and he learned not to chew on certain things. He does have plenty of chew toys, and always has a bully stick available for chewing. Remember at the age of 1 they are still getting their permanent teeth, and chewing on things helps with the discomfort. Even though your dog is trained, refresher courses are always in order, some dogs will continue to test the boundaries. If I were you, I'd be glad he wasn't a barker. We are alway having a refresher course for that. I don't know if you walk him or not, but this can help if you think his energy level is too high, but he sounds pretty normal to me.

| I would agree that 1yr old is a turning point for some. Buddy became very defiant and aggressive at this age. However, I made his head spin and turned him around during that next year. Takes patience and hard work but there is a loving cuddly baby under all that mischief. I promise. |
