| Cocoa Mulch Warning!!!!!! Hi All ! I have not been on this site in a while with work etc..but I needed to post this as I received it from another local Yorkie group that I am associated with..It has been checked out by Snopes and is true!! Just want us to be aware of stuff out there that may affect our babies!!!! Read Following: Received this from a friend who belongs to a Toy rescue group. I read the link on Snopes and it is true. Cocoa mulch is toxic to dogs & cats. Samantha __________________________________________________ _______ Thought all of us should be aware... One week ago today, I picked up a 7 month, toy poodle that spent three days in Emergency Vet Clinic after having a seizure from chewing on a piece of mulch in the yard; He came with 8 pages of lab and diagnostic reports indicating all results were 'within normal limits'; I took the paperwork to my vet for interpretation; His vet bill was over $900.00 and the owners had him for less than two weeks; He's here and doing fine now. Verified by Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yesterday one of our dog agility friends experienced a tragedy and wanted me to pass a special message along to all of my dog loving friends and family. Please tell every dog owner you know. Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly. Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats. Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey’s and they claim that 'It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can; suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.' True information about the mulch can be found here - http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp PLEASE GIVE THIS THE WIDEST DISTRIBUTION!!!

| Thanks for the warning. We thought the apartment complex put this out last year bc my dog and a few others got sick. It made us mad cuz when we talked to them they didn't really care. They just said our dog isn't getting sick so we don't think that your dog is getting sick from the mulch. We never found out if it really was the mulch, but Rosie got sick when they put it out. |

| I wonder if any other mulches are toxic? I have some new cedar mulch and the dogs won't leave it alone. We keep getting after them when they start chewing.

| Thank you for posting this. It is such important information. Before I came to YT I didn't even know about this. There are so many dangers lurking out there for our babies. Thanks again! |
