| Is microchipping painful for the dogs? I'm thinking of geting Kobe microchipped and have heard that the needle is a big one and that they need to be sedated. Then I've heard from other people that their dog got it and they weren't sedated. What are your thoughts????

Donating YT Addict | I got Ozzy done at his neuter but have seen the chip and it is tiny...the size of a grain of rice. I don't think it would be any more painful than getting a shot but jeesh I can't say for sure...

| Layla is the biggest wuss in the world... she cries when she gets shots.. but oddly didn't even flinch when the micro chip was put in. i would NOT have them sedated for this. it is dangerous and not needed. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Many have it done during the spay/neuter since it's a larger needle - the chip is about the size of a grain of rice. But, Wylie had it done awake. It would be more painful than a thinner needle, to be sure, but not worth putting them under for - like Marci said.

| Yes it is, my vet does not like to do it on any little animals unless they are under.

| I have friends that do the microchipping and personally there is no reason to have your dog put out. Its less painful than a shot. But we all react to things differently. The chip is very very small and most of the time the dogs don't even notice anything has been done. Its really quick to have done.

| Both of my dogs are microchipped. Izzy had it done when she was spayed so she was under sedation. Gracie was not sedated and didn't make a peep. I had their micro tags on their collars and a girl at my vets office suggested not doing that. There have been people out there who have taken the number off the tags and had the registration changed to themselves. Naughty!!! Something I hadn't even thought about...so beware.

| I would have to agree with Marci - both my girls wimper and pull away when getting a shot, but neither moved when the chip was inserted.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Both Pixie and Maya were microchipped without being under and the vet said they never made a peep. I prefer to do it when they are out but Pixie and Maya had already been spayed so I couldn't do it then

| Daisy got her microchip when she was two years old & she didnt complain at all! I wouldnt recommend getting your dog sedated. That is unnecessary in my opinion. Amy

| Sammy yelped but it was over in like 2 seconds. Don't let this be the reason you don't get a microchip!
