YT Addict | You want me to put my finger where??? My baby had been dragging his butt on the floor and I took him to the vet for daycare, as normal, and told them he either has worms or needs his anal glands expressed. They said he doesn't have worms but does need his anal glands expressed. I was like ok can you do that for me while I'm at work. She said oh mom I can show you how to do this. As I have no idea what she is talking about I was like ok sure, then she said you put his finger in his butt and I was like........OK, you can stop right there!!!! He'll be coming here to have that done! |

| you were MISINFORMED! If anyone, even a vet tells you to insert your fingers INSIDE of a dogs anus to empty the anal glands, THEY ARE WRONG!!! You do not need to do that to empty the glands. It is all done externally, and although unpleasant, it takes just a few seconds and is easy to do once you know how. Ask a vet or your groomer how it is done. This must be done on a regular basis on small dogs to prevent an anal gland impaction. If you want to learn how, and have no one to show you, my yorkie grooming dVD explains it all. Just PM me if you are interested. You can read all about it on my website if you want...see the link in my signature. Sue & Cricket Quote:

| I know that many vets express the anal glands from the inside, which does mean putting your finger where the sun don't shine....But I would not recommend that method for most people. |

| Yeah -- I know how you feel. I have had my fingers down Archie's throat, I have pulled poop from the hair on his butt, I have even let him throw up in my HAND to keep him from throwing up on himself, all the while driving my car with the other hand. But I can not -- WILL NOT -- stick my finger "up there!" Luckily, he has not had anal gland problems, but if he did, he'd be off to the vet in a flash!

| On smaller breeds it is much easier and you are assured you are not injuring the dog if you insert your finger when you express them. This is totally normal.

| I would be afraid to try that. My two have never had to have their anal glads expressed. If they ever do, I'll let the vet handle it.
