| Gggrrrrrr...evil People West Boca breeder arrested after county seized more than 50 dogs Click-2-Listen By JENNIFER SORENTRUE Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Thursday, May 22, 2008 A West Boca breeder was arrested this afternoon after animal control officers seized more than fifty dogs, five birds and a horse from his farm, Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control Director Dianne Sauve said. James Marinakis has been charged with six felony counts of animal cruelty, Sauve said. He has not yet been booked at the Palm Beach County jail, according to the sheriff's office Web site. County officials were recently given a search warrant to take the animals, after Marinakis failed to comply with a settlement agreement he reached with animal control officials in another case earlier this year. Under the agreement, Marinakis was ordered to improve conditions on his farm, where dogs had been kept in makeshift cages and not given proper medical treatment. Most of the dogs removed from the home today had cuts, bite marks and severe skin and eye conditions. Nearly all of the were covered in feces. Animal control officers worked through the morning and much of the afternoon removing dogs from the property, which is located on the edge of the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. They are expected to work into the evening processing the animals and evaluating their conditions. Marinakis, was trying to create his own breed of dog, called The Centurion. They are a cross between a mastiff and a Shar-Pei. The county has spent years responding to complaints about the property and the animals. When officails visited the farm last year, they found more than 80 dogs. Many were underweight, with severe skin conditions and painful eye problems, and were limping from previous injuries. Many of the dogs have been kept in makeshift cages that do not protect them from the Florida heat and rain, officials have said. After a legal battle, Marinakis agreed earlier this year to give 29 dogs to animal control. The majority were given medical treatment and proved friendly enough to put up for adoption. But some were too sick to save, Sauve said. Several tested positive for heartworms. As part of the settlement agreement, Marinakis was allowed to keep up to 55 dogs. In return, he agreed to let animal control officials inspect his property with as little as five hours' notice and to improve conditions on the farm. As a result all of his outstanding citations were dismissed. Sauve said Marinakis failed to comply with the settlement agreement. She now plans to ask a court to give her custody of all of the dogs that are being removed from the property. Meanwhile, the county's new animal control regulations, which require all breeders to get a permit, will likely prevent Marinakis from breeding again here.

| I don't understand why they would let the guy keep 55 dogs out of the 80 the first time they went there...If all those dogs had problems, why was it able to continue for another year?!? That is not ok.
