| What age first grooming? Hi Y'all! I'm a first time Yorkie mom and am curious at what age they should have their first grooming? Lola is an adorable (of course!) 8 week old. Her coat is rather thick and her ears aren't erect. Will grooming alone help that? Thanks! |

| Start grooming, playing with ears, clipping toes, etc. now. Even if her coat looks fine, groom everday. For a thick coat, I'd use a pin brush since he's a puppy, but once he gets his adult coat in switch to a brush. If you don't like the pin brushes, you can use a mustache comb instead. Puppy fur is so much finer and more wreckless, so it seems to me it mats easier. Use a grooming spray too. There are tons to choose from. I clip Luca Dean's nails with a human nail clipper. Just make sure it still cuts cleanly so Lola doesn't get ragged edges on her nails. As long as you start early on all this stuff and do it often, even if she looks okay one day, do it anyway. That way she will get used to being groomed and it won't be such a hassle. Dean's okay with the grooming part after three weeks -- finally! But he was 5 months when I got him and probably hadn't been groomed a lot. His ears were up though!!! You can tape up their ears with tape -- someone else will have to explain this one. If you like the floppy look, you can leave them down too. Unless you plan on showing Lola, the ears being up is a matter of preference. Their first cut/groom/clip can be done whenever. I pull the scissors out about every other day and try to work on Dean's ears and feet, just to keep him used to the scissors. You can groom yourself, but I'm no poster child for that! I gave Dean a rather unbecoming haircut -- he had awful mats around his face and tailend. I tried for two hours to get them all out, and it was the first time I'd ever dealt with mats, so I ended up buzzing his body, leaving tail, legs and head hair on. Then I clipped his muzzle with scissors and that was really what made him look non-yorkie like. His hair grows fast though -- he'll be yorkie looking in about 3 more weeks! Good luck to you! I'm sure other Yorkietalkers will post some more useful info on the ears. You may try a forum search on that too for detailed instructions. Welcome Lola and Lola's Mom! |

| My breeder was a groomer also. As soon as I got Carter home (just shy of 6 months old), I took him to be groomed. When Carter first adopted us, he wouldn't let me roll him over to even touch his belly but now does it in delight! He stands perfectly still for me as soon as he sees his brush.

| Hi, I just took my 4 month old Demi to the groomer today actually and they told me that this was about the right age. However, I have been giving her baths once a week on my own. I plan on taking her to the groomer about every six weeks just for a good bath and brush out since they do such a good job! |

| I'm taking Trevor next Friday... he'll be 3 mos. He's doing pretty well with the blow dryer and brushing, but still can't stand to have those nails clipped. A friend of mine's daughter is a groomer, so we're going over to her house and she's going to do it there. Much better than leaving him all day at a grooming parlor The only thing I'll probably get done is the hair between his eyes trimmed since it's starting to stick out and poke him in the eye. Also his feet need to be cleaned up and around his bottom I might even get her to put a bow in his hair... I'm having trouble because the hair just isn't quite long enough. I'll be sure and take before and after pictures too. Cyndie and Trevor |

| Sorry...I had a terrible experience at the groomers, and so did Archie. Poor thing. So now, my boyfriend does the nail clipping, we make bath-time into a play thing for Archie so it's not ever bad (he learned to run into the kitchen after a bath because he knows he's getting a treat). I brush his hair before bedtime a couple of times a week, which he loves. As for the ear cleaning and stuff, or minor trims, that's the only time Archie goes. I think it's important to make the grooming time like a bonding time and spare the unnecessary fright of leaving the poor yorkies with a stranger with scissors for an hour. |

| I had Bo groomed at 10 weeks. It was a "puppy cut" which is basically just a quick bath, blow dry, nails trimmed, and face trimmed up. I also asked her to shave his ears and also his bottom (for hygiene purposes). She was wonderful with him and he did fine. I think as long as the groomer is patient and is used to puppies they do fine at about that age. Bo is my first Yorkie and I had read that to get the ears to stand, you must keep them shaved. His ears aren't standing yet and he's 3 months old. I'm not going to tape, tried it and it was too much trouble. If they stand, they stand... |

| I started taking P.J. to the groomer when he was around 2 months of age. Since we are going to keep him in full coat when he matures, I have the groomer give him a hygenic clip which consists of shaving around his private areas, trimming the ear tips and a nail trim. Yesterday was his second visit, and the groomer started training his hair for the topknot. I have him set up to visit the groomer on a monthly basis. |

| eye curtains my puppy's hair is getting pretty wild too. We want to keep it pretty short and teddy bear'ish but my vet said it's not a good idea to take a puppy until they've had ALL of their vaccinations, including rabies. Is that usual. The worst of it is the hair inbetween the eyes on the nose. he's looking through hair curtains all the time. Should i just cut it myself?
