| In our house the cat and dogs fight like cats and dogs....kitty is only a year old so she's very playful and is constantly bothering the dogs, trying to get them to play. Ricky and her will often chase each other around....but the boys will also try to attack her when she's getting to close to me while I am eating and they are begging....and they won't let her in bed either. They stand at the edge and bark at her. I don't like them going after each other because sometimes Prince gets too excited and tries to attack the nearest animal...Ricky....so I've tried to curb it. I am also afraid Kitty, with her claws is going to hurt one of them on accident. |

| We have 3 cats ranging from 5 to 11, when we had Megan, she was the alpha of the house. Spooky is our cat, and she and Megan slept in the bed with us, Holly, one of my oldest son's 2 cats didn't really play, but she would try to groom Megan, nothing funnier than the disgusted look of a cat trying to get the rest of the hair out of her mouth. Since we got Gina, Holly and Skimble, want nothing to do with her, they both hiss at her, while Spooky has slowly begun to tolerate her. I think the cats held a meeting after Megan died and said ",No we aren't going to let a pint size rat run us around anymore", their words. Gina just wants to play with them, but she's a little too aggressive sometimes. Hope everything works out with yours, when you bring your puppy home. Cheers Quad & Gina

| I have a cat and was very hopeful that they would get along. NO such luck I have tried to introduce them, many times, but Bailey (dog) starts barking and then my cat hisses It's a good thing that I have two floors. When Bailey is up he gets the main floor and cat, Kitty (I know, original) gets the upstairs. When Bailey goes to bed in my room at 8pm, I close the door and Kitty comes d/s. Perhaps they don't get along as Kitty was 13 when I brought Bailey home. I still introduce them, but keep my hands on Bailey to move him at a moments notice. Still hopeful though So glad to hear that there are cats and dogs out there that can live together. How great is that! |

| We had just taken in a feral mom and her litter of kittens when Gracie first came home. She was sure she was there to tell those kitten just how to behave. It seemed she was in constant motion playing with them and keeping them in line. I had the challenge of teaching her the "no barking" thing very early on since whenever she gets excited as she plays her bark becomes non-stop. The only real problem we had was that the mom being feral did not appreciate all of Gracie's attention to her babies when they were still quite young. Gracie had to run for cover a couple of times when Mama cat decided Gracie had over stepped her bounds. We ended up keeping a couple of the kittens and Gracie has one favorite that she still loves to play with from time to time. The cat will just lay out on the floor and Gracie will bounce around her as they dare each other to get a little closer. Sometimes the cat will get Gracie is a bear hug and they tussle for a few seconds but it's all in fun. Gracie gets all excited and barks a bit until the game comes to a draw. Since we live outside of town in a wooded area the cats go in and out so Gracie has the job of letting me know when someone wants to come in. She takes her jobs very seriously. The cat entry job means no cat ever is allowed to wait very long since Gracie is on the alert. |

| We adopted our recovering feral kitty several years ago, so our yorkies were coming into HIS house when they were each adopted. It was a success from the very beginning--he and our male yorkie became immediate wrestling and racing buddies. With the recent addition of a second yorkie, we were beyond happy to watch them discover that they could all three play. The cat even seems to view the younger yorkie as his charge and he keeps a check on her as though he thinks we don't know what we're doing.

| Sigh...I just gave my older dog his sunday night bath and found a scratch on his head, in his ear and on the outside of his eye. I knew that the boys and that cat had a serious fight last week because the cat was hissing at them and that has NEVER happened. I think they attacked her and hurt her. I noticed his eye was watering more than usual the other day but because the shadow from his hair, I didn't notice the scratch. It's not deep, but I am not happy about it at all. I am not a huge advocate of declawing and have basically let my cat get away with destroying my house. She's tore up furniture, the carpeting and even the walls....it got so bad I was putting nail caps on her. Now I am questioning whether I should let her keep her claws. She teases the dogs and the dogs go after her...there is definitely no innocent party in the mix...but I am afraid she's going to end up seriously hurting one of the boys being that she's much bigger and stronger than both my boys. I don't think she realizes she is a big bully, but she is. She jumped on top of Ricky once and he totally disappeared. You couldn't even see she was sitting on the dog. Out of all of the times they harass each other, she's rarely hurt them.....but I don't let it escalate either. I was thinking of putting the nail caps on again....accept she can still poke them in the eye with her nail capped. Any advice?? I am thinking of getting a squirt gun to use when they start going after each other. I yell and they disperse....but it doesn't stop them from starting all over again a few minutes later. The worst of it seems to happen later at night, during bed time and in the morning when we are getting up. It seems to be when miss kitty is the most playful. I am sure she's bored, despite all of the interactive toys she's acquired....besides...it's much more fun to play with a live animal. Ricky isn't really any bigger than some of the prey she'd hunt. She's only a year old. When will she grow out of this crazy cat phase? Last edited by theporkieyorkie; 12-08-2013 at 07:14 PM. |

That's rough trying to protect without being restrictive or punitive. Re: her age, though, I've had a number of cats and the first 12-18 months have consistently been the crazy ones. One was so "wired" that I didn't believe he'd live to be a year old--that he'd end up getting himself killed somehow. But he ended up being the smartest, most "helpful" of our household for thirteen of his fourteen years. (He helped raise other animals in the house.) So, yes, there is hope for your young lady to calm down as she matures. Hope your baby's scratches heal well and quickly and that they learned from the accidentally overly rough play.

I now trim the nails on my indoor cats. It can be done if you do it from the time they are young. The caps are an option, too. Really the best thing for the cat and the dog is to train them to coexist. Fighting should never be tolerated. If you need to get a squirt bottle to stop it then I would start being the pet police right now. Because dog's are generally more trainable than cats you might want to get your guy used to the sit, down, and stay commands for when he decides a good romp with the cat is in order. | |

| Two of my cats, Sadie and Bruiser ignore Gizmo and stay upstairs during the day, then come down all night after his bedtime. My other cat Lucy who is 10 and was a hand raised feral baby (all of my cats I bottle fed as they were all feral rescues), and she is having a sibling rivalry with Gizmo. Lucy I believe thinks she is a dog because she rides in the car, goes to a on leash dog park, and does many other dog related activities. It's funny because I have raised six or seven litters of feral kittens, and Lucy loved the babies and would mommy them, but she Would alienate them as soon as they got big enough to be adopted out. With Gizmo she went from sleeping all the time, to getting up when Gizmo does and goes to Bed at the same time as Gizmo as well. They are like brother and sister. Lucy also growls and hisses at Gizmo, and Gizmo growls and barks at her. At first my husband thought they did not get along, but we soon realized it was how they communicated because the cat can't bark, and the dog can't meow, they both growl :-) it gets ridiculous at times, like when they both want to lay in my lap, that they will sit and argue for hours HAHAHAHA . Gizmo will nip at Lucy's tail, but gently, and Lucy bops Gizmo on the head with the pad of her foot, but with no claws. There have been days they have sent me to bed early just to get away from their bickering over who gets to be where :-) who would have thought that for the last 10 years, all my kitty Lucy needed was a puppy to be her bestest friend :-) it was funny when I had the groomer come, because Lucy is super gentle, but she started hissing and growling when the groomer picked her up, I had to explain to him it was her we way of communicating lol, and of course she was a perfect lady while she got groomed hehe. |

| Tried nail caps but my cat kept chewing on them until they came off. Declawing her front paws was the best decision for everyone around, and after the recovery period (when you have to use shredded newspaper in the catbox until healed), she never missed them and destruction went from major to zero. |

| Mario and HIS cat play all the time. They run and wrestle constantly. We got her as a kitten and he just loves her to pieces. She is not and will not be declawed. We did use essential oils and a squirt gun to train Marcy when she was younger. She learned not to scratch up the furniture, not to tear up my plants, and not to be on the kitchen counters. Essential oils, lemon-eucalyptus on furniture and on cotton balls in plant containers, are great for training cats to stay away from certain things. We have cat scratch furniture for her, and I trim her front nails about every two weeks. I started doing this immediately and still mess with her paws throughout the weeks in between trimmings. My furniture shows no sign of cat scratching despite having a kitten in the house for the last 7 months. I bought the nail caps just in case, but have never used them since the other methods worked so well. I let Mario and Marcy work out their "don't over do it" play tactics, and neither has ever harmed the other, BUT I will say they really do care about each other, so they do not want to harm the other. Mario and the cat are about the same size as well, so that helps I imagine.
