Star New Member! - HELLO! :)

hey everyone!

Im Yobi and i am in love with toy dogs, especially yorkies and chihuahuas.

I will be getting my first Yorkie this summer i just have some questions, and i was wondering if you guys can help me with some answers.

What types of Yorkies are there?
1. so i want to get a yorkshire terrier, but ive been reading around here that since it is a "toy" dog, there is no such as a mini yorkie, tea cup or micro. (etc.) - so are they all the same?

2. also, i also read somewhere there are "silky terrier." is there a such as well? and if so, what other "types" are there to be aware of?

3. lastly, ive noticed that when theyre newborns and weeks old, theyre all dark: brown and black. but as they grow, they get tanner, and sometimes white.

do they all become grayish/whiteish? or depends what type you get? - how would you know what color they will be if they all look the same when newbiews.

(because i want a dark brown/black and if it gets lighter (which im sure it will, i want it to be a tan color. not grayish.) - if the option is there.

please and thank you.

Welcome to YT! And it will be fun to be a mommy to a Yorkie. Congratulations! Yorkies come in many different sizes and colors. "Bumping" in hopes that someone with more knowledge will answer you.

thank you! im sooo excited to be getting my own yorkie! his name is going to be Brookyln or perhaps Uilius Brooklyn.

i was told that the silky terriers are a whole 'nother breed.
and there is no such as teacups and whatnot. (i found a post specifically about that and read up on it.)

i want a small yorkie when full grown as well, but i read that they wont be too healthy?

either way, when i see the dogs for myself, ill fall in love with one and then ill know

until then, thanks for the reply! hopefully more people can respond as well

Welcome to YT! I will try to answer your questions.

1. Yorkies come in all shapes and sizes. The AKC Yorkshire Terrier breed standard says "under 7 pounds". I believe they need to be at least 4 pounds to show them, so the show standard is 4-7 pounds. Yes, there are 2 pound yorkies out there, but any breeder who uses the wording "teacups" or "tinies" is a red flag to stay away from them. They are purposely breeding for a smaller size to charge more money. There are also 15 pound yorkies out there or "teapots" as some say.

2. A Silky Terrier is a different breed all together. They look similar, but they are larger. Now, this may be confusing, but Yorkies have a "silky" coat. That is just how they are described.

3. Yorkies are born black and tan as puppies. As adults, they are supposed to be steel blue (looks gray) and gold (or blonde). Of course, some are lighter, and darker. There are also Chocolate yorkies, which are infact not breed standard (they are mostly brown). There are also parti-colored yorkies that contain some white (which is also not to the standard).

I hope this helps!!

Welcome. You will love Yorkies. I have 3 now and a pom and I have had Yorkies since 1970.
The AKC standard says they should be 7 lbs and under, I believe but they come in all sizes. I have a 5 1.2 lber, a 3 1/2 lber and the 7 month old puppy is 4 lbs right now. Actually my largest one has been the sickliest one. Just make sure you find a great breeder and you will be off to a great start. Silkies are a seperate breed and do resemble Yorkies but are bigger, shorter coats and have a longer face. You may see people refer to yorkies as silky but they are talking about their coat texture.
Generally they start out black and a little tan, their heads will turn to silevr and then to gold or tan. Their bodies can stay black or turn various shades of steel blue or gray, depending on their genetics. Hopefully some breeders will respond with a better description, I am just going by my experience as a pet owner.

thank you soo much for the information it did help a lot, and i will keep all this in mind when getting my yorkie

question - i will be moving to Lima to get my yorkie (i live in L.A. now) - so is it ok to get a yorkie from a pet shop? or do you think perhaps a (professional) breeder is the better option since they know more of the parents and all that?

First let me say welcome. In answer to your last question, please do NOT buy from a pet shop. Reputable breeders do not sell to pet stores. if you want a healthy puppy, please get it from a reputable breeder who tests thier dogs for genetic defects and health problems.
As far as color, it is hard to tell what color they will be when they are 8-12 weeks old. BUT look at the mom and dad. That usually is a good indicator. Ask the breeder if the parents have been bred before and if they know what the puppies coats were like as they grew older. Your breeder should become you best source of information about how your puppy will turn out although none of them can give a guarentee as to final adult size, color, etc. They will certainly be much more accurate then a pet store. I am so pleased to see you asking all of the right questions before picking out your new baby

Welcome to YT! I dont think there is a question presented here that at least one or two of us couldnt answer... I am by far not a pro but have learned SO MUCH here on YT!

You have received the same answers I would have offered! I would like to stress BE CAREFUL when choosing a breeder! You are doing the right thing by doing your "homework" on your new baby!

Good Luck and Welcome!

Welcome to YT. How great that you are researching before you buy! You're moving to Lima - is that Peru or somewhere in the US

Lots of good advice about the variations of yorkies!!

Please, please do not buy from a pet store -99% of those in pet stores come from puppy mills.

There are a lot of good breeders on YT or you could check Yorkshire Terrier Club of America for some breeders in your area

Hi welcome to YorkieTalk, I see you've gotten a lot of good advise, I found YorkieTalk before I made up my mind about what kind of dog to buy. I was really afraid to buy a yorkie because they do have a reputation with some people, but when I found YorkieTalk and realized how much everyone loved their babies I decided to take a chance on a yorkie, and it's the smartest thing I ever did.
