| Weed and Feed? Can I use it? In previous years I have used Wal-mart's weed and feed on my lawn in the spring. I was just about to go out and apply it now when I thought I'd ask here if anyone else uses it. And how long must a dog be kept off the lawn if I do use it? I'd ask a vet except it's Sunday and Mother's Day and so I don't want to bother a vet.I have a new puppy who is 10.5 week old. OK she's not a Yorkie like Bentley was....she's a Lhasa Apso..But I hope it's ok to still ask dog adviice here. This is the best and only website I have found that is active about dogs. Connie

| Here is some advice I just found on a Yahoo Question and AnswerI recommend focusing on the 'feed' as opposed to the 'weed'. If your grass/yard is healthy, you will have fewer weeds. It took me about 3 years to accomplish a healthy lawn throught core aeration / seeding / and verticutting but gradually the grass overtook the weeds. I do still have a dirt path around the fence line from the dog, but that's part of the deal. Be careful using 24D if you or your neighbors have grapevines...they are extremely sensitive to it. Read the label of any chemical you use on your lawn, and it will tell you if safe for dogs or other animals...good luck. * 1 year ago

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I do not fertilize the area where the dogs go. Last summer we had the landscapers fertilize and they forgot to tell me they did it and Pixie got sick I had to take her to the ER vet, she was falling over and throwing up. So this year I am not taking any chances, I am doing it and not where the girls go. I think after a few good rains it should be ok.

| We have grubs/cutworms or whatever you call those fat white worms that eat the roots of your grass. He put insecticide everywhere except where the doggies go. Now I think all the grubs have scooted over to the insecticide-free spot because my furbabies are digging in the grass and finding them. Now what? (Rhetorical question.)

| I have done it, but I keep the dogs out of the yard for 24 hours and wash their feet for 2-3 days after putting it down. I will not be doing it anymore. My friend put the grub stuff down and didn't keep her dog off of it and she had to put her down.

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | We were at Lowe's the other day and while in the check out line I noticed bags of turf builder that had "safe for kids & pets" on the bag and lawn can be use immediately after treating the lawn. Now, that's not the same as weed & feed I suppose, wonder if they make weed & feed safe too? In any case, I didn't know there was such a thing as lawn stuff that was safe for pets right after applying. We've been holding off doing anything because of the dogs, but our lawn needs something.

| If you are using any type of weed killer, the dogs must stay off for at least a full 24 hours afterwards. I would also be careful with a standard fertilizer even without week killer. Make sure it gets watered in the lawn very well after that 24 hour period and wipe their paws for several days afterwards as well. And, I wouldn't let them out to play - just potty and right back in.
