| sort of a rant (fair warning) my future MIL got a shih tzu back in january. the dog came from a puppy mill (i think) it was not in good health, covered in fleas, scared of grass, etc. Well, obviously the dog spent its whole life in a cage, when she got her, the plan was to train her by using a playpen with a bed and a puppy pad in it. I tried to tell her that it wouldnt work, but i didnt try to argue or anything. Well, the dog is about 7 or 8 months old now and not potty trained, and they only take her outside to potty, she never really goes outside to just play. It breaks my heart, they feed her grocery store brand food, and the dog wont eat very much, not as mucha s she should and is very small and doesent have much energy. I really want to speak up, but its not my place, my little yorkie is my baby and if someone tried to tell me how to raise her I would get angry. I have actually started to lose sleep over it. Its heartbreaking watching her sit in that pen all day and only get out to go potty and eat. what should i do?

Donating YT 30K Club Member | That's sad. Maybe your fiance could talk to them about it not being fair to the dog to keep it penned up all the time and offer to buy her some better food to try.Good luck

| I am not really a great advice giver-but this is really sad. I hope you can do something-or that they will at least find her a good home.

| How sad. I agree, maybe your fiance could talk to her. You might try taking a better quality food and just tell her you thought maybe she would like to try it.

| How sad. Maybe you can spend time with your MIL and ask if you can go to each others house or dog park and have play dates? Tell her you are trying to socialize Cammie. |

| I think that's a great idea...get together for playdates often. So far as the food...maybe you can excitedly tell her about a great new food you've found your baby and tell her about it...offer to get her a bag for her puppy to try. It might not seem pushy that way

Why did she get a dog if she doesn't want to play with it or let it out? | |

| I think she may have gotten puppy fever... i had just gotten cammie like 4 or 5 months before and her son (my fiances brother) had just bought his daughter a maltese for christmas. My fiance and I were just talking the other day about how she was the last person who would get an inside dog, she cannot stand messes or anything in her house being out of order, and dogs arent exactly the neatest creatures....

| hello Jessica Hi Jessica, Maybe you and your MIL could meet for walks and or get together with your doggies at your house or hers....than you could mention a great food you found for your baby and how it has chaged the way your baby looks and poops and etc...just rave about it and how good the food is...that it may be a bit pricey but well worth it.....Good luck! I know that no dog should have to live its life in a cage.. BearBears Mommy |

| I agree with the great advice you've gotten. Your best bet is to attack this in a very "psychological" way. A lot of people feed bad food. If someone berates them for their choice, they're not likely to change in their defensiveness. But if you act excited about your new-found information, she might listen. I guess it depends on how much you actually like her, but this can be a bonding experience. Encourage her to learn more about dogs with you. Encourage her to come visit us at Yorkie Talk or perhaps find her a Shih Tzu forum (just searched and found these)...... Shih Tzu Chatter Two Off The Leash ---- The Place To Hang Out for Shih Tzu Owners Good Luck and I hope this turns out well and brings you together!!

| You've gotten some great information here. The first thing that came to my mind is that you should get her a "gift" basket that includes some quality dog food, some suggested reading material, and maybe a training video. It isn't like she's had the dog forever, so you could just present it as, "I've been collecting items to give to you for your puppy. I hope you like the things I've purchased." I'd encourage your fiance to contribute to the basket so that you aren't bearing the total cost and because it may be easier for her to take from the 2 of you jointly. After all, what mom doesn't like presents from their kids?
