Does any one travel long distance with their yorkies? Any suggestions to make this trip a more comfortable one for Teddy would be appreciated! Besides gas and rest room breaks we will be driving straight through from Phoenix to Minnesota which is about 26 hours or 1,800 miles. He generally goes every where with us and travels quite well on short trips but since this is going to be a very long trip I don't want it to be tramatic for him. Any tips on how often we should stop to let him do his business and exercize, what we should feed him along the way or anything else to make this trip
less stressful on him....

Our Toto has more miles on her than a '60 Chevy [by car & air]!! She is an "only child", is pad trained and small. When travelling by car, we put a large soft-sided crate on the back seat with the opening facing front so she can go from the console to the crate [make sure it's level and flat and doesn't "rock"]. We put her wee wee pad & water in there. On the console, we put a comfy bed and I always carry plenty of blankets for her to snuggle in and plenty of toys/chews. She is happy and loves to travel with us. Of course we stop as often as we need to, but don't have to make unnecessary stops to "walk" her ... we do let her exercise every time we stop, taking turns to exercise her while we take our "potty" breaks! Works for us!

Hi,
In the past we used to travel long distance with our yorkies, Chelsey and Chanel have only experienced a 4 hour drive, but my others did well on trips of 24 hours, we stopped every 4 hours to let them out for a little walk, keep water handy with u and just feed them their normal food or anything light, make sure they are kept cool, be careful with airco that they dont get too cold, ull find that if u drive through the night they will sleep right through.
I packed a bag with their things in and kept it on the back seat so i could easly reach it, things i put in there: harnesses and leashes, water bottle and dish, food and dishes, wet wipes, towel, toy, take Teddy's blankie in the car with u for him to sleep on!
Make sure u take his paper work and keep it in your purse!

You probably know but for someone traveling for the first time - always bring
bottled water. You know what the change in water can do to humans, well
it's much worse for these little guys. If from the time your pup is little, you
say "Go pp" when you want them to you will have no problem when they are
in an unfamiliar place...when you say that they will know it's ok to go there.

We drive a Yukon Denali, and this is what I do. I lay half the backseat down and put Maggie's crate there. On the other seat is her car seat. She rides great, and when she is tired she goes into her crate for a nap. We stop about every two hours for a stretch. On the side of the backseat where her crate is located, is also where her food and water is located. We use the little dishes that attach to the side of the crate. Just don't overfill the water one.

Our Gracie has been all over the US with us. We set up her cage in the back of the van but left the door open so she could visit with us in the front. We gave her dramamine so she would not get sick, yet she threw up...
The more we took her on trips with us, the better she got about getting sick. The one thing we did learn was not to stop a rest stops to let her potty - they are filthy and we believe she got worms at one of them. Find out of the way places to stop that other dogs have not visited. We never let her potty where other dogs have. The rest stops are disgusting!

we just drove 1500 miles from Texas to Vegas. We stopped every 4 hours but Gracie wouldn't pee...you'll have to read my other posts.

we went by RV so it was easy to have food and water for her. don't know if you're traveling like that or just a vehicle.

Hey just curious where are you going in minnesota?

I will be heading to the central part of the state to
a little hole in the wall town called Glencoe. Which
is located out around Hutchinson or about 60 miles
west of the twin cities metro area.

Kimberley aka txshopper73 it was your post in regard to your
trip with Gracie that made me think to ask for suggestions in
regard to my own trip. So, seriously thanks for the updates!
Teddy is a good little travelor I just don't want him to become
too overwhelmed and end up stressed out for 8 days until we
get back. I am so excited that my family finally gets to meet
the famous Teddy of our conversations. Also a big thanks to
everyone else that gave me some helpful tips!

I am typing this before reading the answering posts so as not to get distracted by what someone else says. LOL

We went from the Springfield Missouri area to Tucson Arizona, with a puppy about 10 weeks old. We stopped every time he seemed restless. Everytime we stopped for gas or food, I took him out to walk, to let off some energy. Most of the rest of the time he slept. We didn't have a crate and he did fine. We did the same on the way back and he did fine then too. We had our kids with us so he had lots of company and lots of comfy places to lay whether he wanted to be warm or cool off. We did have newspaper in the floorboards incase of an accident.
