| Is it Okay to Call a vets office for reference? I was thinking about calling a breeders veterinarians office to check the health status on her dam and sire. I was wondering if this was okay to do.. It seems sneaky but I know if she has nothing to hide this should be okay. But I was wondering if the office staff would offer this info to me. I don't think she knows this is the reason why I wanted to know where she treats her animals. I have worked for an animal hospital before but never had anyone call me for this kind of info..is it wrong? Is it like humans health records..off limits and private? I am spending alot of money on her pup, I need to make sure the parents really have no medical issues.. |

I also ask adoptive parents for their vets info too just to make sure they know them and that they will be taking my puppies to that vet (Some may fib to U and say they will take them to a vet to get shots then never do) and I request if they don't take the puppy to that vet that they let me know what vet our puppies will be going to. I would call the breeder 1st and ask if U can call her vet and ask about her Yorkies, I see nothing wrong with it for U as the adoptive parents has to be protected also, if she makes a big fuss then I would have to wonder if she doesn't have something to hide. If the breeder says no ask her why, if she is a good breeder then she should be 100% open and 100% honest with U and have no problems in sharing any info with U. Just my OPO tho. Hope this will help U. Lee | |

| My breeder gave me the name and phone # of her vet so I could do just this thing. I would hope that an honest breeder would have nothing to hide. I doubt that the vet would release any information without the breeder's permission. However, if you took your puppy to that vet for an initial "puppy check" I would think he would know what problems to check for since he also knows the dam and sire.

| Uhh..I called the vet. And was told I could not have that info. They said to have the breeder give me copies..I can understand, but I have a hard time trusting some folks it is sad that it has to be that way. I want to ask the breeder but I feel like I am offending her for asking for permission to call her vets office. Like I am saying I don't trust you after everything you have told me..If she has a good relationship with the staff, she could easiy say leave out the liver problems and seizures and patella stuff but everything else is okay to share..you never know..I know I sound paranoid but I have heard too many horror stories on here.. |

| my vet will not give out that info either unless I tell them and I always tell them if anyone calls to tell them anything they want to know. Sometimes one of the office girls won't because the message from me didn't get passed on. And as a breeder, I always ask for my buyers vet number too. so far, I have been given references on every one I called. |

| IME, most vets cannot give out specific info, just that the person is a customer.
