| will my yorkie forget me? i was wondering if Kash would ever forget me if i left him with someone else for an extended period of time. for example, i just read a thread about someone who might leave their yorkies with family members for 6 months while they're studying abroad... i'm always afraid to even think about planning a vacation without Kash because i think when i get back he won't remember me and will have gotten used to being with whomever is babysitting him... so my question is... how long do you think you need to own your yorkie before you can be absolutely positive they know YOU are their mom/dad?? i've only had Kash for about 3 months... i can tell he loves me, but he pretty much goes nuts for everyone (stranger or not)... i want him to KNOW who i am... does that make sense? i want him to like other people, but once he sees me, i want him to think "hey, that's my mom, and i love her best!" lol. am i weird or what?

| That person you read about was me and I am having the same thoughts you are. My boyfriend and I were joking last night about how they wouldn't even remember us when we got back. I don't know about 6 months but I DO know that when we left Franklin with my mom for 3 days, when we came back, I'd never seen him that excited before. SO maybe they do remember us...

| I would think that our dogs would remember us even if we were away for a long time. Mia hasn't been around my mom a whole lot, but after not seeing her for 3 weeks sometimes, she goes crazy when she see's her and definitely remembers who she is. I find that pretty neat. She doesn't get excited to see someone unless she knows them.

| Okay, let me say this about dogs remembering you...I got my dalmation Hailie when she was eight weeks old. At the time I purchased her I had an a$$ of a boyfriend who I practically lived with. When Hailie was 2, this guy and I brokeup, it was the end of a 6 year relationship. He refused to give her to me, eventhough my Mom purchased her for me, and all of her papers and records were in my name. Needless to say, after trying to deal with the matter in a civil manner, I got fed up. I wanted my dog! To make a long story short, I went to his house while he was not there and took her back. It had been 3 months since she had last seen me. I pulled up in the driveway and said Hailie get in....she jumped right into my car and has been with me ever since. Like I said it had been 3 months and she still knew who her Mom was. And I should say she is NOT a friendly dog! If she did not remember me she would not have gotten in my car.

| I got Max from a breeder 7 months ago. Last weekend, I took a friend to get a puppy from the same lady. Max not only remembered her but ALLLLLLL of her dogs. I thought we would never be able to leave with all the sniffing and kisses...lol!

I visited my parents once a year after they move back to JP. First couple of years, she definitely remembered me but after that she remembered me by smell. She acted like "sniff sniff, I remember this smell but where do I remember from??" hahaha But she loved me every year when I visited them. (meaning my parents and her) She lived with my parents for the next 12 years and she crossed the rainbow bridge 3 years ago. | |

| My boys love everyone! Sometimes I am overwhelmed by them and their constant shadowing, but the second they go to someone else to snuggle I get jealous! LOL (isnt THAT weird?? haha) But when they are ready to settle down for the night, or they are scared or I come in with other people, I am the person they run to first and foremost. Its a special bond that your pup already knows

| I've been wondering the same thing. I'm going on vacation out of the country for two weeks, and my 7 mnth old yorkie will be staying with my mom who lives 2 hrs from me. Mayme has stayed at my mom's house probably 3 times, but I was there with her. I'm kinda worried about if she will think I left her for good or not, or if she will remember me when I get back! |

| Bernie was a rescue and he definitely is part of our family (and knows it). But when we had an opportunity to visit with his foster parents about 6 months after we adopted him, he was beside himself with joy. He knew them, I have no doubt.

| Poco and Wicket lived with my mom. I lived with them for maybe 2 or 3 years. After that just for visits. They definitely remembered me. Though the relationship may change some with regard to dominance and such since you're not an active part. But a few weeks won't do anything. When I'd leave Mogli for up to a week or two with someone he would act weird for a few days but then back to normal. It was his way of showing me he was pissed off that I'd left him! I should add ... my wife's dog ... she likes other homes better! When she stays with her cousins ... and it's time to go home ... she hides!!!

| Im going through the same thing right now Meka has had to go and stay with my grandmother who is a retired nurse. Meka had an accident a week ago, and my grandmother is nursing her back to health. At this point, she'll probably have to stay with her for at least a month or so... but, it feels like forever and its only been a week and a half! Im miserable not being able to see my baby everyday... Ive been to see her three times (granny lives a bit away from me, and with gas$$$, Im trying) and each time, she quickly pops up to greet me... But on the last visit, I called her and she started to come to me and at the last second went to granny (who was sitting next to me). But, I was a little heart broken. It got me to thinking about if she will remember me? Will she bond with my granny more than I? Its hard... really hard.... Sorry so long... but I was happy to see there's someone that feels the same as I.... Best of luck to you

| Well, the last time I left my boy for 3 months to go back to visit my family on the other side of the panet, he still remembers me. Dogs are very very loyal to their owner. There was a documentary that I have watched that said dogs remember their previous owners for up to 5 years. When I was going away, I worried more about him not wanting to eat, getting sick etc and I never worried about him not remembering me.
