| Puppy mills are so upsetting. Our family bought a mill dog (my mom's impulsive purchase, not mine!) and it was just the worst experience ever! The dog had a level 5 heart murmur or something -a pronounced murmur so loud that you could tell just by holding her something was wrong. Our vet told us that she wouldn't live past 3 months. All of this, RIGHT after we'd had to put our 14 year old husky down. It turned out that the puppy's murmur was related to a valve in her heart that didn't close up after birth so after a $5,000 surgery (eventually the puppy store's vet filed for his insurance), she's fine. It's very upsetting to see the conditions these dogs are kept under. We have one of those stores around where I live and even though practically the whole town protested, they're still here and selling dogs! UGH! |

| wow.... That story is intense.... I am glad my baby is healthy and i know where he came from.... i understand a problem may occur to just anyone but at least doing our home work and not supporting those mills.... it is a good thing we all can do.... I am glad to hear the dog came about ok.... but hard to imagine such expensive surgery !!!! And some people are always looking for a bragain "puppy" so sad..... or for a window puppy at the pet store.... my friend just got one, i will show your posting , she will freak out !!!!

| Thanks all!! That was a horrible experience and I hope my mother has learned her lesson. Last time she bought a dog that's supposedly a yorkie. I say supposedly because he's 20+ pounds and does not even remotely have the frame of a yorkie. They swore up and down he was a purebred, but he's got curly hair and only the markings of a york. I think he's actually an Australian Terrier, but who knows. Those places change the papers on them in order to sell them, it's disgusting. The puppy store here that I mentioned is ridiculous. It breaks my heart because we live in NY and get pretty much the worst of both the summer and the winter. Some of these dogs are housed in "window" pens, so that they can be viewed by the cars and people passing by. When it's warm out, they lug the dogs and either put them in play pens or stacked crates outside in the hot sun. It's horrible.

| It is amazing how much power Oprah has. After her show, rescues around the country had record highs in inquiries and adoptions! She also featured a rescue called "angels gate" , which is the story of a former nurse who homes over 200 severely handicapped dogs. These dogs were in REALLY bad shape, mostly because of abuse at mills. She gives them lots of love, even makes little wheelchairs and walkers for them so that they can get around, and gives them medical attention 24-hours a day. It was so touching. | I only saw part of but I got the feeling that it was a good piece on the puppymill problem. I also got the feeling that she will be continuing doing stories on rescues and adoptions. I think this is a breakthur, we should just keep writing to her show and expressing our thoughts on keeping this at the forefront and hopefully people will come to fully understand about puppymills and the horrors alot of animals go through in their short lives. I took this as a positive step today. JMO.
