Yorkie Lover Donating Member | Do they remember their moms?? I was thinking about this the other day...do puppies as they get older remember who their mom is?? For instance I got Magic from my aunt, and when we take her over there to see Ellie (her mom) they really act like they know each other...is it because they really know each other or they just get along together..?? Okay I know this is a silly question but I thought it was interesting and had to find out!! Does anyone know??

| Our Scottie, Piper (RIP) visited her brother every once in awhile, and it was obvious they remember each other. If you think about it, with their hightened sense of smell, and the very specific smell of a dog's poop and butt area, they would almost have to know that the dog is at least familiar, if not part of their family... |

| That's very interesting! I took Cookie back to the breeder for a visit since we're getting another puppy and Cookie remember the one dog (not mommy) that cared for her as a mother. Cookie's almost 1 year now so I don't know. The breeder seemed to think she remembered the room she was in for 2 months and a couple of the other dogs that helped take care of the puppies. I bet Magic and mommy remember each other. How old is Magic? |

| Someone told me once that they don't remember one another, but I don't really have any personal knowledge or experience... |

| When my sister was getting her Maltese puppy I took Tuffy with us to the breeder's house and Tuffy didn't act like he remembered anything.. in fact he snarled at his father and basically wanted nothing to do with his mother. I'm not sure whether he's anti-social or he genuinely didn't remember them at all. I did get him very young so it's possible he didn't have enough time to get attached to his parents.

| I doubt they walk in a room and think.."there is my mother, sister, father". etc..but I do know they go by familiar smells, remembering people and other animals. I do find my females who have had puppies are very tolerant of all puppies, not just their own. Most act like all pups are theirs and they want to care for them. I have had litters I have combined at 6 weeks to play and a mother does not single out hers if they try to nurse. She will treat them all like hers. |

| I would say they mostly do not remember. Take warmth in that because it would be a forever pain for them if they did. Don't be surprised if when some of you do take your pups back after being seperated for 6 months or so and there is a dislike or noninterest going on. |

| I gave my best friend a puppy, and she always remembers me and she remembered her mommy too. Her next door neighbor got a pup that I rarely see but when that dog see's me from accross the yard she really seems to remember me, she will pick me out in a crowd.

| We are about to find out tonight. Roxy's mom is coming over tonight for the first time ever. It will be intresting to see what we find out. Jacki is right about Piper. She never forgot her brother. She would posture as if he was a stranger and he would too and then you could see then hit recognition. Wow it was neat. Then she would take the alpha roll she had as a puppy and he would roll over for him...though he wa bigger and more powerful. lol What a hoot. |
