Help! My 6 month old York get VERY upset when I leave her

Hi! I am very glad to have found this site! I have my first beautiful Yorkie(Lexie), when I first had her she seemed absolutely fine when I needed to leave her, but about a month ago I took some time off work and was able to spend most of my time with her, now if I need to put her in a room she gets so distressed and just howls ..... can anyone help? I feel so worried about it!!

Awww, I am sorry to hear that Lexie gets so upset...Unfortunetly I do not have any advice for you because my Sammi is the same way only she does not howl, she pees on the floor and then hides until I come home...Like she is doing pee pee out of spite...I am sure someone here will have good advice for you...For me, I just tell her BAD GIRL, PLEASE DO PEE PEE ON YOUR PAPER until the next time

Princess does the exact same thing except she pees in her crate! It is disgusting! I get home and she is sopping wet and I have to give her a bath. This has become a daily routine Any advice would be appreciated! Good luck to you guys too!

It is probably seperation anxiety. She will be fine! If you have been spending a lot of time with her and now you have to leave...she will be sad. She will get used to it though I PROMISE.

I would suggest the following:

1) When you do get home, reward her big time. Give her lots of love and tell her she is a good girl. Lot of treats and love!
2) When you are home, put her in the room closed alone. If she cries, ignore her. When she stops crying open the door and give her a treat and tell her how good she is.
3) When you leave her, give her tons of toys, leave on a radio or tv. I STILL give my 8 month yorkie a kong full of treats when I leave.

It will take time and I know it makes you feel terrible. I wanted to cry... It will get better. Just respect how lonely and sad she feels and give her TONS of attention when you return.

If it is possible, see if someone (i.e. a family member or even a dog walker) can check on her periodically.

My Stomper boy barks ever so often when we leave (just on weekends when he KNOWS we are not working), but he is fine. Give it time. Don't feel too bad or you won't be able to cope with it!

Awhile ago, a few members commented that their babies cried a lot when they left... But as soon as they thought their mommies were gone, the babies chilled out!

Maybe it's a dramatic display to show her love, hehe

Well my first piece of advice is, even when you are home, crate her or place her in a room not with you. Because they are very habitual and they get confused as to why on some days they are with you all day and others they are not. This becomes distressing for them. So even when you are home, though it's hard, you have to either crate her or put her somewhere by herself so she gets the point that she can't be with you all of the time. Even when you have time off work, make sure she never forgets that sometimes she needs to be alone. My coco used to be like that until I started crating her for an hour or two on weekends. They really don't have an understanding of time, so you can even crate them for 30-45 minutes. It will eventually stop, I promise. YOU just have to be strong and put up with the howling and whinning until she gets the hint.

I had the same problem with Olivia, but I did the same thing everyone told you to do above and it worked.

I am home with mine most of the time. Well, except for the very often medical visits needed because my hubby is ill. I let them have run of the den when I leave, with the TV on of course. I do not crate them unless one of them has a behavior problem and goes into timeout or it is nite nite time. I haven't had this problem come up and I am so glad I don't (hopefully never will). However, I recently had to force Chloe to take her heartworm medicine and she got so mad at me she would not have anything to do with me the entire evening.I was in tears, she would not play, take a treat from me or even come into the house after potty, I would have to move out of the way and let my hubby get her in. So, for those that have potty issues and other issues because your furbaby is angry with you, I am a firm believer that they do those mean, I'll show you things when they are upset with us.

is to get another yorkie!!! My first yorkie was a rescue and he had terrible separation anxiety to the point that I hired a daily dogsitter for him. This time around, I got two yorkies. They could care less when I leave them, cause they have each other to play with. They watch me leave from the front window and I think that they are saying, wow mom is gone, lets play!!!! They are not destructive while I am gone, I have taped them and they sleep, eat, and drag every toy they own from one end of the apartment to the other. Its like leaving two kids with no supervision. LOL

Oh I know this can be a problem. I kinda do the opposite of what most people do
and it works for me. Since I wanted her to want me to leave I only and I mean
only give her 2 of her favorite liver treats when I leave and play on the floor with
her....hide and seek etc. but when I come home , I act like I have never been
gone and read my mail and in about 3 minutes I say hi and talk to her but I do
not pick her up. Sorry to say she likes liver treats better than me ( I've taken
it well) It's better than thinking of her crying for me to come home. I never
leave her more than 3 hrs and it works for me. Another tip some of you might
be able to use if you are in a condo or apt. I was sick and tired of running up
and downstairs with my first puppy to house train her so I went out and bought
a piece of sod and put it on my balcony ( I put some heavy plastic under it, and
after I'd pick up her #2 I would spray the grass with water and my neighbor
thought it was so funny when I told her I had to go upstairs and cut my grass.
with sissors. Only had it out there a month and she got the message.

I took My bull terrier to puppy school back a few years ago and They really pushed Us to buy the small puppy toys that You can put snacks inside of ? I am not really sure of the name of them but there are a few different ones out there. anywho, They said to put peanut butter in the little holes or even the cheese spread or the Pup's favorite snack and give it to them just before walking out the door of course I am a housewife so I am lucky to have never needed to try it but its a idea !
They said the pups start to look forward to when You leave LOL.

That's another good idea, I hear that ball is great. Also I should have included in my previous reply that
leaving the radio on is not only soothing but blocks out background noise that
these little dogs feel obligated to react to when they hear it.
