| newbie hello everyone! im Connie, MansfieldsMom . i have 1 yorkie, named General Mansfield, but we call him Manny. He is 13 weeks old and weights 2.8 pounds. we've just started feeding him soft canned food along with a few hard pieces. he seems to really enjoy the new change. this guy is the craziest lil dog i've ever owned. he has a great personality and always makes my boyfriend and me laugh . he is a very smart pup, but we are having the 2 common problems, of potty training and nipping fingers, toes and anything he can get a tooth to. im sure the nipping has to do with, well im not sure. but anyway, the other, this potty training is prolonging. its strange, he'll go to the puppy pad on his own every once in a while to do a #1, but you walk through the house and find his #2's. its getting kind of frustrating because i know he understands because he's also done #2's on the puppy pad, but not on his own. anyway, so hopefully i can get some tips from some veterans, here. i look forward to getting to know this group and being able to get great tips and tricks. |

| Welcome to YT!!! I know you'll love it here! You should stop him from nipping asap. Ive heard from vets and other yorkie owners that yorkies will get into the habit of nipping even after they are finished teething. Every time he goes to bite you, say no firmly and give him a toy he can chew on. It'd prob be best to get him into nylabones. They are hard and one of the safer toys that won't splinter off. I don't know much about pee pads, but I did hear once that some dogs don't like to pee and poop in the same area. if hes consistently peeing on the pads and you know, he knows what they are used for, try putting down 2 pads. maybe i'll use one to pee and the other for poop. Anyway good luck with Manny! hope to see pics of him soon! |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Hi and welcome to YT! I agree with stopping the finger nipping right away as the poster above mentioned. Ruby used to nip playfully at my fingers and it didn't bother me until one day.....ouch! After that I always offered her toys to nip at instead of my hands. Potty training can be difficult, you have to be persistent and consistent. Have you tried confining "The General" () to an area without carpet and offering two pads?

| Welcome!! So glad to have you & Mansfield here! You will have to sign him up for our Little Gentleman's Club, you can do that here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ight=gentleman How are you trying to train him? I would recommend crate training or at least placing him in an x-pen or a small gated area with a pee pad, when you can't watch him every minute

| Welcome Connie and family!! General Mansfield - what an impressive name! For the potty training - what has worked for me: Keeping them very confined during the process. If they are not confined, I watch 'em like a hawk! I make it nearly impossible for them to make a mistake because they're never un-watched. Coby is a year old and still does not have the run of the house. He is 99.9% trustworthy in the areas in which he is allowed free reign. (Our older Shih Tzu is 11 and has free run of the entire house.) When we have the time to devote 100% of our attention to him, he is allowed in the other areas. As he learns that he has to return to the potty area from those areas, he'll get bigger free reign. Whenever we would have setbacks, we simply reduced the area and started again. The months of really hard work will pay off in years of stress free living. We also give GREAT treats for correct potty behaviors when training. Because really, that is the greatest trick I want them to learn. So GREAT treats and really fun parties - hooping and hollering - let him know that made you SOOOO happy!! Wishing you Good Luck, Lots of Dilligence and Patience, and Tons o' Fun!!

| we have one in the bathroom and one in his house that is changed everyday the only other place in the house w/ no carpet is the kitchen, and the laundry room is outside and used as storage. but when he nips, we do offer him toys, but he thinks that every time he sees your hand move that he is supposed to chase your hand and try to bite it, then we again do the no! and offer the toy. |

| We do crate training and one room training early on. What we did for Coby - our last trainee: We fenced off our kitchen (non carpet). He lived in the kitchen only for the first several weeks. And we were in there with him all the time that he was running free (out of the crate). First thing in the morning, he would get out of his crate, and I would use a leash or another xpen to keep him on his potty pad until he pottied. Then treats and acting silly. Then he got to play in the kitchen. We watched him like a hawk for signs of pre-potty. When he started going to the paper by himself to potty (oh he knew we were happy about that; he knew he was getting a treat), we started taking him into the living room. On leash at first (because I am easily distracted). We would about every 30 minutes walk him back to his pad in the kitchen. If he went, more treats and partying. If we couldn't watch him like a hawk in the living room, he had to stay in the kitchen. .... and etcetera as his area continues to grow. Now, both of our dogs come and tell us when they've pottied in order to get their treats. See how well WE are trained? We use(d) a small crate (only big enough to lay and turn around in) and x-pen fencing spread out to go across our big doorway between the kitchen and living room. I like the wire x-pens because they are more see-through than some of the plastic onces. Now we're using the simple wooden baby gates at both of our stairways. I can't wait for the time when we can walk through our house not stepping over or moving anything!!
