Donating YT 11K Club Member | We went to the doggy park! Usually there are big dogs like Pitts and Labs but today there were all small dogs so me and Sophie went in. I just took Sophie cause today was her 'special day' and my bf was with Teddy and London, since i can't walk all 3 alone. So anyway we went in and Sophie was following me everywhere. She was the smallest one there. I was like awww but still I want her to socialize but she kept wanting me to pick her up. I take her to meetups every month and walk her a lot, is there any way to break her from this habit? All the dogs were super friendly. She doesn't like to socialize much, just follow me and want me to pick her up. I feel so bad.

| I have a Boxer as well as a Yorkie (Tyson). Unfortunately he won't play with the little dogs, so every so often I'll put him down (only because he's trying to jump otherwise) and he's out there running and playing with them. It's a prety funny sight to see the little guy chasing Great Danes and other huge dogs. I will say it's a good workout for him. Hopefully someone will have an answer to your question...my little guy is a social butterfly. I don't know if that's a good thing or not. |

| It took Franklin... about 5 weeks before he would even approach another dog. At first when we took him to the dog park, he would just cower in the corner, with his tail between his legs. It was horrible! We were very persistent and took him at least 2-3 times a week. It's been.. probably a month and a half now and he will now walk around, sniff other dogs, and occasionally run with them. He even growled and barked at a Boxer the other day. I thought Franklin would be anti-social forever... he has gotten so much better! I think the key is to just keep taking her. The more you take her, the more she will get accustomed to it. I forgot to mention that the longer we stay, the better Franklin gets. I try to stay for at least an hour when we go because he's still pretty shy at first. It takes him at least 15 minutes before he'll start to play with other dogs. Just keep taking her and continue to build her confidence and she'll be a social butterfly in no time!

| Whatever you do, try not to pick her up. I know it's hard, but it will make her think that there's a reason to be scared. Marley was terrified of other dogs her first few weeks of puppy class, she would hide in the corner or by my feet. We weren't allowed to pick them up, and I think it really helped. By the end she was playing more with the other puppies, and now she's pretty social.

| Be very patient with her. Some dogs just aren't the social butterflies, but hopefully in time she will become more secure and enjoy playing with the other pooches. I agree with Miss Marley with her advice about trying not to pick her up every time she asks - just don't let her get too stressed out. I want to commend you on being such a good Yorkie Mom. You are going to great lengths to socialize little Sophie -- please give yourself a pat on the back . |

Hopefully she's never been attacked, some dogs are just timid by nature, especially if they weren't used to being around other dogs when they were young.
