HELP!! What to do? Hi all...newbie here. Ok we have had our first Yorkie (a female) for 8 months. SHe came to us from a bad situation. We have always had 2 dogs. We had her (she is 3 yrs now) and a Dalmation. Well we finally had to put our Dal down last Oct. The kids were really upset as was I. SHe was my dog. Anyway, they had always co-existed pretty good. The kids wanted a yorkie puppy...so we got them one for last month. His name is Max and he is doing great. Sleeps most of the night n his cage, and is using papers quite well....overall a great little guy Now the problem, Roxie our first is not taking this well. We have given her lots of attention to offset the puppies attention, but she just does not like him. He wants to play, she wants to kill him. She has "attacked" him 2 times and so we are back to keeping them seperated. Primarily because we cannot figure out what else to so. We are getting concerned that she is not going to "lighten up".....She will not play with him, or even look at him for that matter. I have praised her and keep telling her shes my good girl, but I am reaching my end here.... Any suggestions will be appreciated. THanks, Jim

How long have you had the puppy? It usually takes a while for them to accept the new member into the home. It takes my oldest female about 2 weeks before she readily accepts new ones into my home. I try not to keep them seperated too much, but I do warn the older ones about snapping the youngsters. I do take one and put them into another area if it seems to be too much for them. The puppies are a lot more energetic than an adult dog, and can really get on their nerves sometimes.

i aagreee......... it takes time to adjust...... one thing you might try is to take them both to a park and let them interact there..... it will be "neutral ground" so that youre oldest doesnt have to feel so possesive or agressive....... patience and a watchful eye are key.......

It took a long time for my first yorkie to accept our poodle. Around two years. She was so upset! It takes time, I would not separate them unless you aren't there to supervise. They have to get used to one another. Something that worked for me - put both dogs on your lap and pet them both at the same time. That way they are close together, and they realize you have time to love them both.

So sorry for you - my two girls love each other and I hope it never changes but two previous dogs (Lhasa Apso and a yorkie) HATED each other and it is nervewracking I know as well as so upsetting to see your babies fight. Did this only start when you lost you Dalmation? Or did you have the pup after that? Pups DO hurt whilst playing and I can't believe how patient our Gypsy Rose is with Gizzie at times! (They are 18 months and 6 months) but the other day Gyps had enough and gently but firmly pinned Gizz down on her back and this worked, she wouldn't let her up until she'd calmed down - I didn't interfere at all, watched on in amazement ..! She was telling Gizzie that she was very patient, loved her but she was boss! Good luck I wouldn't separate them either unless you have to - they have to learn to get on and don't forget who the real boss is - YOU! Make sure they know this ...! Don't shout at them as dogs seem to take that as encouragement!! Praise them when they are good ...!

answers Thanks to all so far..... we were down to only ROxie for about 7 weeks after our Dalmation passed. Max has now been on the scene for a month. Roxie will not even look at him unless she has too! We try to only seperate when we can take no more snapping at him. He is so playful and wants to play with her. He actually cries to go see her when they are seperated. It is quite sad. All she does when they are toghether is keep moving and snaps at him. I am concerned that this is probably stressfull for her. I don't know. We were so excited about having 2 of these little cuties and now it is turning out to be a real bummer. I think Roxie was better with our Dal because she was bigger. Not sure what we will do but just take a day at a time and keep trying. thanks again.....but if anyone has further ideas I am open to them all!
