| Chronic Giardia Hello - I am a new member so haven't had a chance to post a pic of Lula yet!! When we got her in December at 3 months old she was diagnosed with giardia and tapeworm. She was treated for both and the giardia did not go away so we treated her again. I had a sample taken a 3rd time now and she still has it. The vet mentioned that some dogs can be constant carriers of this parasite. I know there are other threads on this but didn't see anything on puppies being treated more than twice and STILL having it She has no side effects really but I hate the thought of these nasty little things in her!! Also my vet (the VCA) in MA is charging me $50 per sample... normal?? Thanks for your thoughts!! |

| what is your vet treating your pup with? I know it can be hard to get rid of, so maybe she was never clear of it after the first time she was treated. Maybe a longer treatment plan is needed. |

| Hi when I got Milo he tested positive, the Vet gave us medicine, we came back he still had it, he gave us another medicine, he still had it, Then he gave us a Very strong antibiotic, I am sorry I do not remember what it was but it was ground up in powder form and I had to hide it in very smelly food otherwise I could not get him to touch it, anyway the Vet told me that some dogs just test false positive, and if this last antibiotic did not work, and since he was showing no signs we were just going to watch him. The antibiotic did work, so we had no worries. I love my Vet however I think if he tested positive again I would have went for a second opinion some where. |

| She is now taking Metronidaz - twice a day and Fenbendaz once a day. The 1st 2 times she was diagnosed she only took the Fenbendaz once a day. Each is for 7 days straight. Thanks for your replies! Had your vets ever mentioned the chronic giardia... like she will always have it? |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. My Sissy has has giardia twice, once at 9 months (very severe) and again at 18 months. The first treatment given was with the pancur powder which did nothing. She was then treated again with metronidazole in a liquid form. That seemed to do the trick. I do know Giardia can be found in the upper or lower GI tract or both. Once they have had a case, they are very susceptible to it again. Even though it is a parasite, I believe it acts almost like a virus. It goes dormant, but can come back again. Any type of stress can bring it on. It can also be found in any standing outside water; wet grass; wood chips. Birds are the primary carriers, so it can easily be picked up if your pup walks through dried bird poop residue and licks his/her paw. Using baby wipes on the feet and underside of the body can help reduce this likelihood after your pup has been outside. Please be very careful with your baby, as anorexia can develop as a result of the Giardia as well. After Sissy had it the first time, we began feeding yogurt (Stoneyfield Organic or Dannon Natural - lowfat vanilla) in the morning for breakfast. This really helped her tummy heal and seems to assist in keeping her healthy. Sending healing wishes.........

| Also, they can reinfect SO easily from their feces. You must clean up very well after they go to the bathroom...inside or outside. Remove the feces and use some bleach/water to clean the areas that they used. As far as cost, when I had mine tested, it was $35...but where you live would most likely be more expensive. It is a pain...you have to be so vigilant about cleaning up after them. I was able to tell when they were getting better...the diarreah (sp?) stopped. It was party time for sure. Good luck.

| Welcome to YT! Sorry you are having so many problems. Have you thought about getting a second opinion. I would certainly visit another vet and see if there is something else that could be done

| We got a little Yorkie that had giardia and tapeworm too. The vet treated her three times, and I cleaned the yard like a madwoman. But we finally got rid of it. Never had it since. My vet said it can come from anywhere....a bird flying over your fenced backyard can drop something that will have it and if your dog sniffs the dropping, it can get Giardia again! Goodness gracious. What next? I just keep my yard very clean and wash down all bird droppings. No troubles that I know of since. Good luck.

| Lula had no symptoms it was found in her 1st stool sample at the vet and she hasn't gotten rid of it since (she's 6 months old). But the vet said common side effects are diarrhea, not eating, possible weight loss. She's getting spayed tomorrow Wish us luck! |

| Continual soft poo, often light-colored...sometimes evidence of some blood...mucousy sometimes also.

| With us the first time it was diarrhea, lots of it, that turned mucousy and then bloody all in the same day. The 2nd time, it was vomiting (this time she had it in her upper GI tract) and general lethargy.
