| Cotton Coat Experts...Help my foster girl!!! LOL, lately grooming seems to be a big issue around here. I picked up a little foster girl this am. She's an adorable little peanut and I will post pics after her photo shoot. But....she has a cottony coat (no question there) and it is FULL OF KNOTS. I won't cut it, but need to improve it. Any tricks or suggestions?

| If it knotted really bad you may need to get a dematting comb for it. Using cowboy magic detainger and gently using you fingers through the knots can loosen them. Some people use slicker brushes to get matts out. Jewels has a modified cottony coat and I use minksheen shampoo and pantene conditioner on her to help keep her from getting matts. The pantene really makes her coat smooth. Good luck I have been through the dematting before

| I have one with a "cotton" coat also.... when I finally got her all detangled I tried several kinds of shampoo/conditioner. Several things worked for me. Paul Mitchell shampoo and conditioner keep her hair pretty well unmatted. I also liked Earthbath Puppy Shampoo, Bio-Groom Silk Conditioning Creme Rinse Concentrate, and finally a detangling spray by Crazy Dog, Baby Dog Grooming Spray. In desperation I even used my own Biosilk Silk Therapy, but haven't needed to use it since i found these other products. All of these were found at either Petco or Pet Food Express. Good luck, these coats can be a challenge.

YT 500 Club Member | We keep our little "cotton" in a puppy cut and use oatmeal shampoo. That works the best. She hates brushing; so it is easier just to try and avoid the tangles.

| Chewy has a cotton coat and I hate to cute mats out. I have had to at times so wht I do so it won't show is I cut 1 or 2 snips through the mat and it seems to be enough to get the mat out with out showing much or at all on their coat. I cut up and down (Toward the belly not along side it if you know what I mean) I find that once his coat gets past a certain point he gets mats. I comb him every day (I never use a brush... only a metal comb) as long as I groom him every day and keep his hair from getting to long he doesn't mat and looks fine.

| Try Biolage Detangling Rinse on her. Put it on wet hair... work it in and rinse. It really helps getting those tangles out. Just make sure you keep it away from her face..... really worth a try!!!! We use it on Shelby & Seymours long coats and it really works well!!!!

| Thanks everybody. I'm going to be giving some of your ideas a try! I sure don't want to shave her down if I don't have to!

| sometimes it is more humane to remove the extremely matted coat than to try to untangle it. As a groomer I have seen matted dogs come to me with severe "brush burn" from the owner trying to brush out a tangled coat before their appointment. This leads to a terribly painful skin reaction and itching while the skin tries to heal. The dogs in turn scratch at the bad skin and cause further damage. It is extremely painful pulling out mats in a tangled coat. A toy dog has tender skin and the mats usually are around the neck, the "arm pit" areas and groin, sides...all very tender areas to any dog, but even more so to a small yorkie. It is not as if you let the dogs coat get out of hand, it is a foster doggie, so maybe clipping her down short one time is the better option. |
