| The girls are getting fixed and i'm scared Okay so we put off Jaya's spay because she went into heat earlier than we thought........... now she is done, and Jenna is almost 6 months now and we have decided to get them fixed at the same time in addition to their four canines pulled. (Jenna will also be getting her dew claws removed). My hubby and I are feeling very nervous about this..... he is scared they wont wake up...... and he is scaring me now with all of his doubts now too! Especially since Jaya is less than 3 lbs and Jenna is about 4 lbs. Jaya is about 9 months and Jenna is almost 6 months. What do we need to be aware of?? AND how much time do i need to or should take off of work........ it will be a lot of work i am thinking because it will be both of them at the same time in addition, shud i avoid getting them fixed at the same time, or is it better? I will be seperating their xpens and beds so that they will have their privacy im just so scared guys! my poor babies! |

| My Jack Russell mix had a dew claw on one of her back legs that was dangling and always catching on things so we decided to have it removed when she was spayed. It didn't seem to bother her afterwards. I didn't know then that it is suppose to be very painful for them if they are older. Still, I didn't have much choice it kept catching and tearing which also must have been painful. |

| I know how you feel about worrying about the anesthesia. One of my yorkies who has a collapsed trachea has to have LP surgery in a couple of weeks and I am just sick with worry. I don't even have any appetite (which is not like me). I am so afraid I will lose him. Just make sure that they do bloodwork before the surgery and your babies should be fine. |

| collapsed trachea tpaxton23, How old is your baby with the collapsed trachea? I have a sweet baby that is less then 4 lbs and she is 1 yr and 3 months old. She is the tiniest thing, but here lately she is having more "spells" and I'm afraid it is her trachea. I have to take her to the dr. next week and I want to see about having her spayed as well, but I'm so scared. I was never a dog person but this baby runs the show. She has my husband and I both wrapped around her little paw. Thanks Kim Mom of Ariel |

| I would do them both at once so they can rest together. These are the things I would do/want to know: Preop bloodwork done and I personally would do a bile acid test before their first surgery (some people believe doing bile acid testing is going overboard though). Surgery must be done on a heated surface (toy breeds lose body heat quickly). Pain meds must be offered. Isoflurane or sevoflurane anesthesia should be used to maintain but usually something else is used before intubation. If the dogs need to stay their overnight, someone needs to be there the whole time, awake with them.

So... we ended up postponing their operation until this week because my hubby did not want to put them through it...he still doesnt, but he sees the bigger picture. The timing works out great now as well. Both of them will be done tomorrow morning. Their bloodwork was done... as i've mentioned, Jenna's cell count was double in her pancreas...but the vet doesnt seem worried because she has not shown any symptoms for inflammation of the organ. Vet has talked about pain meds and antibiotics. Everything seems in order. I'm not as scared as I was...i've done my research... but i'm still worried... its such a serious procedure. So I guess tomorrow is the big day... <big sigh>

| I'm getting my 3month old who's 5lbs neutered. The Humane Society fixes dogs as young as 6wks. old and as long as they're 2lbs all the time and those dogs do just fine. One dog is getting fixed on the 2nd, one on the 6th, and another on the 10th. |

And yes... I will not be able to sleep tonight. Right now I'm sitting on my sofa with the girls who are sleeping so peacefully. Makes me super sad because they have no clue about tomorrow. I'm thinking i'm just going to camp out here with them tonight, cuddling, watching tv and YT

I think my main issue is the pain they'll endure.. and how they'll feel. They're getting their teeth pulled and jenna is getting her dewclaws removed as well. They wont have any idea whats happened. Good luck with your babies in the upcoming weeks. I will keep you all posted.

| Your babies will be fine! My little guy was neutered last month. He also had his 4 baby canines removed as well as his 2 back declaws. He wasn't in any pain. I went home with an anti-inflammatory medication and some pain medicine. He wanted to run later that night. It didn't seem like he noticed his declaw bandages. My vet had him keep the declaw bandages on for the 1st 3 days and then took them off so the stitches could air dry and heal faster. Everything was healed by the end of the 10 days. I was like you, a nervous wreck the night before and the day of. I didn't sleep the night before. I stayed up and watched him sleep and hugged him every few minutes. lol He was prob mad I kept waking him up. I think it's a good thing you're getting them done together. They will both be tired together. Well, good luck with everything in the morning!!!! I'll be thinking about your girls!!! If you get nervous, you can pm me. I'm a bit of an insomniac and will prob be up for a while!! I know it's hard but try not to worry too much. You'll end up like me and go crazy the whole day till you pick them up.
