| Home alone When did you start leaving your dog alone in the house? She is in her crate 5 days a week from 7h45 am to 4h45 pm. She has water, toys and a blanket. I leave music on and she looks outside the patio door. She can hold her pipi for that long. If I leave her loose in the house she cries and she recently (she is 9 months) started to chew anything woody... I feel she is not secure in the house. Some of my friends said they started trusting their dogs at around 18 months to 2 years old... I feel guilty and I would like to remove her from the travelling crate? And her crate is for Yorkies and Chihuahua... under 10 pounds. She is 5 pounds. I feel it could be a bit small but from what I see it should be ok. She can stand up and turn around. Thats about it! I have two kids, so in the morning and at night she gets quite the exercise... Right now, in Ottawa CAnada, its winter and we had so much snow this year it is hard to bring her for walks... Any thought on home alone dogs?

| I tried yesterday for the first time to let my 3 have run of the kitchen while I was away and they are 1yr. 9 months and 7months. It didnt work. I guess they are still to young. Or maybe they just feel more comfortable in their pen. |

| I think that 9 hours is too long even if she can hold it... it cant be halthy for your baby's bladder. Have you considered using a pen? It is still a smaller amount of space, but not as small as a crate. Good luck with your baby! |

| I can't answer that since I have the opposite situation. My dogs are only put in the crate when someone is not here, which is not very often and is never for more than a few hours at the most. The rest of the time they have free roam of the house since someone is here with them. If I were you, I would try blocking off a room for her, such as the kitchen, making sure that there is nothing there that she can get into and no way she can get out. I would leave her water (and food if she free feeds) and a bed and toys and pee pee pads "just in case". I would feel better leaving her for 9 hours in that situation than in such a small crate. Good luck with whatever you decide.

| We have an xpen for our baby. He has everything he needs in it. We actually attached the pen to his crate so the space is even a little larger. I only put him in there when no one is home. I have all but the family room, hallway and kitchen blocked off. With the warmer weather, the sun room will be another area open to him-no carpeting in there.

Senior Yorkie Talker | Dim Sum is 5 months old and he is doing actually really good in terms of house training. However when we go out, if its just for a couple hours I would use the crate. If its for the evening or longer I would try to block off the kitchen for him to use. However every time we have tried to block off something for him he has gotten out while we were away. The strange part is that when he gets out he does nothing in the house. I think he just likes laying at the door. Everytime he has gotten out we did a good search of the house and found that he didn't mess with anything. We are about to go out for the evening now and I am going to try and gate him in the laundry with his pee pad and toys etc... I know he will probably bark and whine like crazy but I hope he won't find a way out this time. Last time he ate through the gate... we have a stronger gate now.

| I used to keep Bobby in a pin everyday for about 4 hours. He would go to the bathroom and then step in it and I would come home to a mess everyday. We let him out of the pin at 6 months. I block off the living room that has carpet and close all the bedroom doors. He has the kitchen, family room and the upstaris hallway to run and play. He has been so happy since he is no longer in a pin. He hasnt made any messes or destroyed anything. |

| Leo is 3 months. He is home alone from 9am-4pm. I feed him at 5.30am and take him outside twice before i leave. His crate is in his big pen.He has water, blanket and toys. He doesn't go potty in there at all.He is out of the pen when we are at home.So far he is doing great. I leave the pen door open so he can go in his crate whenever he wants to while im at home |

| I tried Everything that you all said I tried. I left her the whole room, the bathroom, the kitchen, the x-pen. She was so nervous that she would dig the floor until her nails where bleeding. If I left a pipi pad, she would chew it and make a big mess. I tried the tissue pad, and she pipi elswhere that on the pad. The only way I feel she is ok is in her crate. She feels secure I guess. I wish she wouldn't remain as long in it. But we often have day off and I have my cleaning lady once a week that comes and she puts her outside for at least 30 minutes to run around. So it is basically 4 days a week that she stays in there longer. I just feel that has she will get older and into the routine, she will not be as nervous as right now. When I put her in her crate and I come back 5 minutes after, she usually sleeps already. If I leave her free and come back 5 minutes after, she is in a panick mode, she cries and she barks! I just bought a new bed for her. I will start training her to sleep beside me again her bed. At least at night she will not go in the crate. I tried before to have her sleep beside me, but she would start to run around to go see the kids in the middle of the night I use to sleep with her too. But she started to be so attached, that every time I would leave, she would shake and panic. So now, at night she stays with my boyfriend until much later. I feel that her anxiety from separation is getting better! On weekends, she is not in her crate at all! And with easter, she has a 5 days without the crate. In the summer, we have 8 weeks off So I guess, she will feel more and more secure and in the routine ! But no worries, I take a good care of her and make sure she has everything she needs! p.s. I put water and food in her crate everyday. And treats. I just bought her a donkey kong... hope she likes it! Thanks for your help and answers everyone

| Well it sounds like you love your baby very much and she is well takrn care of!! Wow I don't know what I'd do if Roxi did all that you described! You have a great deal of patience.. The only other thing I would suggest is maybe having a pet sitter come by and take her out for a walk and have some playtime .. Or maybe even a neighborhood teenager, looking to make some Xtra money.. Any teenage girl would LOVE coming and playing with an adorable yorkie!! As long as you know them and they can be trusted with your baby... But sounds to me like you are doing great!! XX
