Help - I need potty help Nico has been pretty good the last week peeing and pooping on the paper. All of a sudden yesterday he began doing it again under the kitchen table, and this went on all day. Then he pooped in my hallway. I just dont get it, he seems like such a smart dog, I understand for the six months he lived with his other family he had no training at all, but it seems like this little guy is testing my patience. Any today I cant take him out in the yard because its raining. I am at my wit's end, any ideas? Thanks.

The best advise I can give you is never never never let a dog you are potty training have full run of the house, or let them out of your site. If you do not want to take him out cause it is raining than take him to the pad every two hours. All other times he should be either in an enclosed area, leashed to you, or on you.( a dog wont pee or poop if you are holding them). Good Luck. It just takes a lot of patient and consistency

My problem here is that the family that had him never took him out on a leash, so when I do he sits there a will not move. I am praying for a stretch of good weather so we can get outside, also I have a ten year old Maltese and she has the run of my house, being of course, housebroken. He is now in his gated area, when I take him out and put him on the paper he runs elsewhere and does his business. I just put him on the paper to poop and he ran into the hall and did it there, he is now back in his gate. He is seven months old and he is like a wild child.

Ditto on this answer. It is good advice. Also, go out a buy your baby and yourself a raincoat! It will all work out!

You dont understand. I have no problem taking him out in the rain, the problem is he HAS NEVER FOR SIX MONTHS BEEN WALKED ON A LEASH. So I went out and got him a harness and a leash, and he just sits there, he won't move. And FYI - I own a raincoat.

| By your response I am guessing that you do not have a fence. Am I correct? This is an idea for the harness and leash dilemma. And it is just an untried solution. Just my thoughts. Could you put the harness on him in the house? Then tie a short piece of rope, like about five inches, to the harness? Then gradually increase the length until you can attach his leash without a problem? Do this in the house while you are playing with him. Let the play be a distraction. You might contact a rescue in your area and ask them how they deal with it. I know that they have many leash-shy doggies that come in and they do teach them to walk on a leash. Good luck!

| If he won't walk on a leash, start training him slowly. Start with just putting the harness on him at home without the leash. Let him have the harness on him for 15 minutes, while he has the harness on, play with him and treat him. Then take it off. Do this every day and extend the time until he's comfortable with just the harness. Then after a week, add the leash. Same thing, play and praise him with the leash on. Don't hold onto the leash, let him drag it around (at home). Remember to take it off when you're done and never leave him to drag around a leash unsupervised. When he's comfortable with leash and harness, slowly start taking him out. Don't drag him with the leash. If you need him to start walking, stand beside him with the leash, pull up on the leash and move forward. This will put him on his toes and make him walk a bit. If you just pull, he'll resist and sit and then you'll just be dragging him. Just do it all slowly with lost of praise and treats. Good luck.

This might be a quick fix for the pads, You can get this liquid at the pet store, I do not know the name sorry, it is supposed to smell like dog pee (to the dog) put a few drops on the pad and your dog should try to pee over it. As far as the walks go, if the dog is food motivated try to coax him with treats.

So sorry you are having a difficult time, in the past with one of our puppies that was pee pad trained, we had one in the house and after he went pee on it we took it outside, we also had a fresh one inside and kept moving it towards the door and would take him out as soon as we thought he needed to go. He finally caught on and the pee pads went away. We have had BayLeigh for 2 weeks now and when we got him he was not housebroken or crate trained or potty pad trained. BayLeigh is now crate trained and for the most part housebroken at this point. We keep a close eye on him and if he starts sniffing around in circles we get hm out side to do his business. He only had one accident in his crate, I guess we have been lucky for a puppy that is only 13 weeks old. Just hang in there and be consistent, your baby will catch on...they are pretty smart. Everytime BayLeigh would go outside and do his business and not in the house, we would treat him with a goodie. Now he knows that if he goes outside and not in the house he gets a treat.

Try putting the leash & harness on him (in the house) and sit on the floor with him. Hold out a treat to make him come to you so that he will associate it as a positive. If he does have a good reaction to doing this after a few good try's you can walk around the house with him and give him praise and a treat until you feel he is ready to head outside for a walk. I bet he will love the outside walks once he gets used to the leash and harness. My way of thinking walking is one of the best trainers for a pet. It gives them a new adventure, different routine, exercise more, etc. in turn he may stop doing this in the house.. I know this will sound sort of crazy but can you blocked off the table in the kitchen so that he can't get under it. When we were training our little one we had cardboard blocking our table and other areas of the house until he was trained. Let us know how you both are doing.
