| Can he smell me? When we first got Franklin, I felt really bad about leaving him home during the day so in the mornings, I would come downstairs and let him out of his playpen so he could run around for the 30 minutes or so while I was getting ready. Well recently, he's been barking his head off the MINUTE I get up. Once he hears me moving around, he's starts barking as if to say "I'm ready to play mommy!" The puzzling thing is, he does not bark for my roommate or my boyfriend. We all have different schedules and get up at different times every day, so it's not like he barks at the first person who wakes up. He ONLY barks when I get up. It's unfortunate because I don't like to let him out of his play pen while he's barking. We've made it a rule never to do that. When we come home, he doesn't get to come out until he's calm. However, in the mornings, just letting him bark is not really a possibility... people are still sleeping and I don't want my roommates to hate him. Any suggestions as to how he knows it's me, and what I can do to stop this?

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Franklin knows it's you from your "sounds"....whatever noise you make in the am...are the sounds he's attuned to. He also knows who it is that lets him out....you....that's why he only barks when you get up. They learn your schedules and pick up on things you do differently on different days. Both of mine come to work every day....they know what days are work days by the household habits and noises. Come Saturday....I do not have two dogs running to get in their crates when I pick up my keys....they know it's Saturday.

| You're his mommy. Babies always know their mommies. Murfee recognizes my car when I drive up the driveway.

| Yes, sounds mean a lot to them!! Years ago, my neighbor told me, she knew when I was a block way- her poms got to going to the back door- they would go to the fence in between us- when I got in the house they were always at the fence- barking for me to come and pick them up, let them come to my house for there treats!! They knew the sould of my car a block away!! That amazed me!! Your baby knows what your footsteps sound like, probably!! Isn't that neat!!!

They associate different sounds to different people. The truck sound means daddy....my suv...ME...the school bus means my daughter.

My mom used to tell me that her dogs always knew when SOMEONE was coming home 10 minutes before they got there. I never believed her, my mom likes to exaggerate a lot. She said they could smell people but I wonder if they could hear them?

The documentary also said they "know" time....as in a daily routine...somehow they learn WHAT time they need to go sit by the door. My cats do the same thing....I am greeted each and every afternoon when I get home. They are sitting in the driveway waiting....if I show up at an unexpected time...they aren't there.
