| is it extreme separation anxiety or something more? hi there, Kash will be 14 weeks old on Saturday, and we've had him for a little over a month. we leave him confined to the kitchen during the day while we are at work. he still cries everytime we leave, which is understandable at this age... but my concern is that when i get home, and he realizes i'm there, he cries hysterically even after i've picked him up. as i'm holding him, he just cries and cries and squirms around in my arms... i know he's not ill or hurt because after about 5 minutes of this behavior, he's back to being normal and happy. is this just severe separation anxiety? why does he cry like he's being killed or hurt? i mean, it's not just little whines or whimpers because he missed me. it's full-blown, shrill screaming. i know he's happy to see me, but will he ever calm down completely? i'm not angry at him for this. i just want to make sure that i'm diagnosing his behavior correctly, and that it's nothing deeper than just being a needy puppy. has anyone else had experience with a young puppy acting this way when you come home from being out? if so, at what age did they realize you'll always come back? thanks everyone!

| Wrigley has separation anxiety too! She tends to shake and honk when we come home! When she was a puppy she did the loud screaming like you are describing, she's now 1 1/2. My advice would be to kind of ignore him when you first come home. Don't talk to him, especially in an excited or baby type voice and I wouldn't pick him up right away. Let him calm down for a few minutes and go about your business. Picking them up doesn't help to calm them, I think it actually affirms the anxiety they are feeling at that time! We started doing that with Wrigley and she is really so much better now! I know it seems like you are kind of mean by ignoring them, especially since we are so excited to see them, but it's really what is best when your dog has the anxiety! Good luck!!

| I have 2 boys that I do the same thing to. They are 2.5 years old and one of them cries like that when I get home after being away any amount of time. He SCREAMS almost ... but he calms down in a few mins and is fine! Hes always been like that! Hes just a needy pup!

| My two are 3 yrs old and still cry when we return home. CoCo barks and makes little noises and Coffee really cries. It breaks my heart. We were away for 10 days (my son was home with them) and Coffee cried and whimpered for hours after we returned. I really don't want to go anywhere without them anymore. It's like leaving a 3yr old human kid alone. Sheilagh
