| 7 months old, still not housetrained, still not sleeping thru night Our 7-month old, 2.5 lb. Yorkie Logan is still not housetrained, in spite of 5 months of crate training. When he's not in the crate, he's on his leash anchored to something in the kitchen while I keep a close eye on him. Even after taking him outside to potty, he'll poop on the kitchen floor when I turn my back for 10 seconds to take a drink of water. I am also still having to get up in the middle of the night to take him outside to potty. I take him out for the last time around 10:30 or 11 at night. I don't allow him to drink water beyond 9 p.m. He went potty around 11 p.m. last night and then to bed. Around 2:30, he woke up barking. I just ignored him because I thought perhaps he was just in the habit of waking up in the middle of the night. He settled back down until about 5:30 this morning. When I went to his crate then, he had peed all over it to the point of making a puddle of pee in his crate. I am so worn out. I haven't had a decent night's sleep in 5 months because I'm always having to get up and take the dog outside, even though by now he technically should be able to hold it in for about 8 hours. I'm getting ready to travel and have to take the dog with me, but I'm concerned about having to get up in the middle of the night - at least once - to take him outside where it will be freezing cold. I will also be staying in an apartment, so letting him bark is out of the question. I am thinking about rehoming him, although just talking about it breaks my heart. But I have got to get some rest. I am afraid if I start leaving pee pads down at night, that this will hurt our efforts to housetrain him, although that doesn't seem to be working anyway. Anyone else face a similar situation? If so, what did you do? |

| Just a couple of thoughts try feeding morning and night. do not free feed and water. After your baby eats 15 minutes later take him outside.. Maybe this will help and if you want good rest have you tried putting him in bed with you or in a crate right beside the bed? I am sorry Im not that much help but these are a couple of ideas.. I hope it works out. Hugs Vicki

| I always take him out after he's eaten or had something to drink. He was sleeping by my bed until two weeks ago, and he was waking up at least once during the night to go outside. You would think that by taking him out to potty around 11 p.m. that he could wait until about 7 the next morning to go out again, but that isn't happening. He wants to go back out about 3-4 hours later. |

Right on the money Vicki...just what I was going to tell her. here is what I do, with this routine I had Lulu fully potty trained at 8 months...hoping I can manage it with Zoey as well: I get up at 6 walk zoey and she pees and poos. Then I come in and let her have her breakfast. I pick it up by 7 and then walk her again so she is good to go for a while. Then when my girls get home my youngest walks her. I leave pee pads in the bathroom (she likes to go in privacy like the rest of us) and one in the livingroom under the baywindow behind the sofa for any needs during the day. Then when I get home at 5:10 I walk her then bring her in and give her dinner. I consistently walk her again until I am ready for bed. Her food and water come up by 7 at latest. Then I walk her in my pjs right before getting into bed and she goes all night. She get up at 6 again with me and we start all over. Her usage in the house are becoming far and few so I think I am doing good.

Another good suggestion is to wear him out before he goes to bed. Play hard with him for a solid half an hour or so. That way his behind is exhausted and will sleep. He is probably not tired so getting mom/dad up to take him out is about attention and working off some energy.

| I can only imagine how tired and frustrated you are... The key is consistence and persistence and I am sure you are already doing that.... Maybe by me posting ....this can be bumped up and others can give their advice... I hope you do not have to rehome your little boy but if you do .. I have read tons of smoothe transitions. Everything happens for a reason. Hugs during your trying time Vicki

| I walk Logan in the morning when the weather is good. Regardless of the weather, however, I always take him outside to potty many times during the day. Then he plays a little while and goes back into his crate. When I take him out of his crate again, the first thing we do is go potty. He eats and drinks, and then I take him outside to potty again. After playing for a little while, he goes back in the crate. We have a rather strict schedule. But even after pooping and peeing outside, he sometimes poops inside the house again. For example, a few days ago I took him outside and he pottied. We came back inside for some supervised play time. I was tossing a ball to him when suddenly he just squatted and started pooping. I yelled, "no" and went to pick him up and take him outside. He started to run off, and the poop fell on the floor. |

If you do rehome this is the right place to find a good family. I do have to say just because people have small kids it's not a definite no to rehome to them. I have a 11, 9 adn 3 year old and Zoey is a tiny thing at 6 months...she is only 2 lbs. Her sister Lulu fully grown was 3 lbs and did very well even with my son and the cat.

| Here is our schedule to help~ Hubby gets up at 6:00 am and takes Bleu out to potty and pooh. I feed him at 7:30 Hand feed and water... I take him out right before I leave for work at 8:00 am the he is in crate till lunch time .... If we are home he stays out with belly band on fulltime (NO ACCIDENTS) Mark or I or both of us are at home for lunch and he drinks water and gets kibble right before we leave him again he goes potty and pooh. We are home daily by 500 He eats dinner around 6-7 and goes potty pooh 730 and then we PLAY AND TRAIN (TRICKS) EVERY NIGHT between 8-9 We take him out right before we go to bed last night it was 11 pm and he sleeps all night long till we wake up... I will add when we are home he is out.. His house (crate) door is open constantly and you will FIND HIM in there as that is his comfort zone.... When I first got Bleu I used this same schedule and always when he would go outside I associated the same words... OUTSIDE (he was excited) then we would go to the door same door same time same everything cause that is how a dog associates his lifestyle (REPETITION) He would be outside and I would say (GO POTTY) and when he did I never gave him a treat I would run and swoop him up and hug and kiss him and say GOOD POTTY..... I only give treats on commands during training. He earns them... My husband and I do the exact t same thing so it does not confuse him.. You should hear and see my hubby (HE IS TRAINED TOO ) He is now potty trained fully in the house and crate and will be 8 months on the 23rd. He has been potty trained though since he was 5 months old... PERSISTENCE CONSISTENCE PATIENCE AND REPETITION is the majic words... Hugs Vicki

| 5 months is a long time for potty training. Is there a possibility that your pup has a smaller bladder and just wouldn't be able to hold for 8 hours? Not that he doesn't want to since he whines if he wants to potty but he is not able to. How long do you walk your pup for potty before bringing him in? Maybe give him like 20 minutes of walk to be sure he is done pottying? Walking will simulate bowel movement for dogs so maybe that will ensure he poops everything out? My yorkie uses the pee pad at home but when we go out for walks, he tend to poop again.

| This just dawned on me too~ It could be the environment he came from.. If it was a petstore byb or puppy mill they pooh and pee whenever however and he may not know any better.. If you got him from a breeder that socialized him well then that would not be the case I do not think...

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I think it's important to remember, this is still very small Yorkie 2.5 lbs with a very small bladder. I would not be afraid to leave pee pads down at night. I don't think this confuses them. Yorkies are very smart dogs. He tried to tell you he had to go by barking, and you were too tired to listen (not blaming you by any means, lol), so he did the only thing he could do. I am not a great advocate of withholding water, I am a great advocate of pee pads, and they make training soooo much easier. Dog really enjoy going outside, and when given the opportunity they seem to choose outside. The pee pads can be used for emergencies when no one can take them outside. Poop training is different and it seems like it comes after pee training. Some dogs are more regular and go 5 minutes after they eat solids and are easier to train. Other dogs don't seem to have a clue and if they are within 5 feet of the pee pad that's good. Remember; do not to make any major decisions when you are exhausted. You need a good night sleep and some time, especially if this is the only reason you're thinking about rehoming.

| He's the same age as my youngest..I still free feed, but, I put the food down first thing in the morning and it comes back up at 5:00..mine still pees and poops in the cage at night(I have a pee pad down), but, I know she's doing it after 4:30 a.m as my hubby got up 2 days straight at 4:30 and there was nothing in the cage. At 7 mos. your little guy should be able to go around 7 hours without doing either...I never pick the water bowl up, never have..I guess I try and look at how sometimes they're just thirsty like us, and I wouldn't want someone not letting me have a drink if I were thirsty...give it some more time, he'll get there.. |
