We do not have a fenced-in yard. What is the safest way to let Boo get out and enjoy running around in the yard? Right now, when she goes outside, she is always on a leash that I am holding on to.

Welcome to YT

I would say you are already doing it.
You can get a Extender leash or a longer on but keep her on the leash.. it is the safest.

I agree - we had a fence when I was in a house - it was just GREAT but you still have to watch them carefully - but if you don't have a fence - keep doing what you're doing - it only takes a split second for them to race off - (chasing something - fear - excitement or whatever) and you don't want anything preventable happening

I bought two xpens and put them together. I put a little bench in there. I sit in the xpen with Gizmo and he runs around and plays in the sun. He really enjoys this time outside. We are planning to fence the yard very soon, we're just researching our options right now.

I really don't think there is a safe way. Do you live in a neighborhood with other houses and how close to a road are you? These little guys can take off and be gone in a heart beat. If she is trained to come on command then it would be a different story. Some of my Yorkies would never leave my sight if I let them off a leash while others would take off in a flash.

Just received and put up 4 ex-pens out of our patio door with tiny fence posts as support. Chipper is my "bolter," and every time he has escaped it has been out of the patio door. My nerves had finally had it. Couldn't wait for dh to put up a privacy fence. Our backyard is as big as a reg. city lot, so it'll cost bunches to put it up. With supervision, the ex-pen will/has relaxed some tension.

The safest way for them to be in your yard, fenced or not, is with your eagle eye on them at ALL times!!!!
I do have a fenced yard but even so, I always keep an eye on them when they are out there anyway. They usually don't stay out too long anyway unless we are out there with them. Point in watching them every minute being that I let them out first thing this morning and out of the blue, Toby found a space in between the gate and the fence that he could fit through....and off he trotted. Shocked

the heck out of me and out through the sliding patio doors I went from where I was watching them(just a few feet away). I thought for sure I'd be chasing him down the driveway or across the neighbors yard in my nightgown! But luckily, I just opened the gate and he trotted right back in..........this time. For the time being we put a yard statue in front of that space, but will be blocking it as soon as we can. And of course.....they will still NEVER be left outside unattended or unsupervised.

Yes, I would never let her be outside unattended. I was just thinking ahead to warmer weather and would like for her to be outside when the kids are playing or when I'm working in the yard. What about the tie-out stake thing you put in the ground????????

I never let andy out without a leash I seriously have a heartache the two times he has tried running out the door whem I am either coming in or my husband is.

Without putting up a fence, I think that X-pens are the best idea. We put several together (5 actually

). I never leave them out alone, but it is great when we are out on the patio. They like being out there with us.

We use a 26 foot retractable leash attached to Remi's harness. It is a good distance for him to play ball or frisbee.

I'm not allowed to put up a fence where I live, but won't let my dogs outside without either being in an x-pen or on a leash. I got a light, 25-foot leash for my male Bichon and attached it to a belt that I put around my waist. It gives him a lot of room to move around and I don't have to sit or stand and watch him. I like to garden and work out in my yard and that works great. He's near me and he loves it.

I use tie-outs when the family is here and we're all out in the yard for a cookout or something like that. I put the two dogs far enough apart that they can't get tangled and close enough that they can be touched by the people. They are never left alone even for one second.

I don't have a fence either...just a deck with a gate on it at the steps..but I walk them on a leash down by our lake where there is a huge open field away from the street. Diva & Foxxy get let off the leash and run around or I'll throw a ball or toy around for awhile. Duchess, who's only 5 months is on a leash...she's a bolter right now and is not trained where I can trust her off the leash.

Is there any area in or around your community/neighborhood where there is open field? If not, maybe you could find a local dog park you can take her occassionally.
