Verifying a Yorkie's Age Ok, we just bought a yorkie yesterday from a some-what local breeder. He sold us a "4-month" old yorkie that was described as being unusually bigger for his stock and age. He weighs about 4 lbs, stands at 9 inches, and extends at 18-20 inches from tail to head. But after having him overnight we became skeptical that he is just 4-months old. He is well-behaved and seems to follow rudimentary orders (e.g., sit) and is potty-trained (not really sure about this tho). So yeah, i guess my question is: what are the physical characteristics that distinguishes a puppy from a mature yorkie, given that this is an atypical case b/c of the "puppy's" relatively larger size. Teeth size? Coat quality? Temperament? etc. etc... Thanks. ps. our new dog's name is "Hero"

You suspect that Hero is older? All I can think of at the moment is has he still got baby teeth?! But at 4 months he'd have some anyway?!! I am lost with this one but just to say that if I hadn't actually seen our youngesst baby on a regular basis I would have thought her a lot younger than she was supposed to be?! Has Hero got papers? These should reveal his true age when you get them? Sounds as if he is well socialised but maybe he was brought up in the house? WELCOME anyway to you and Hero!!

Archie was almost 5 months when we got him, and he was pretty big (5 or 6 lbs). He's 8 months and 9lbs now. I don't think you can really tell by the weight, though. But as he grew older, all the black hair around his face started to turn tan. Yorkies are born almost completely with black hair and tan hair starts developing around their face and legs. Also, check the teeth. Archie's baby teeth started falling out around 6 or 7 months. But with training--some Yorkies are trained pretty early so you can't really tell. Is your Yorkie a boy or a girl? As Archie grew older, he started to molest my stuffed animals...but he's not neutered yet.

age It is very hard to determine age...I had a 10 month old male in the ring one time and the judge all but asked to see his akc papers..she said there was no way a pup of that age could have so much coat. Pups start to lose teeth anywhere from around 5 months and up..and if anything puppies get worse in their behavior instead of better the first year or so...they seem to start out so good, they listen, then they get a mind of their own and act like teenagers.

Pat!! That teenager behaviour sounds so familiar - unfortunately!! Gypsy Rose would go DOWN on command, would COME on command and then she grew up and it's touch and go...!! Gizzie has been so good and now is gaining in confidence too...! It is hard to tell the age of a pup because even hair colour changes varies so much - our Gizzie at 6 months is as dark as a puppy 12 weeks!! Official papers are the best way to determine the age?!

At 4 months the pup should be changing facial hair color, and it should still have puppy coat, soft fluffy coat.

OMG! I just looked at my papers and looked at the calendar ... Luca Dean was born on Fri. 13! Aug. ANYWAY ... that makes him not 18 weeks like I've been saying the whole time, but instead, 21 weeks! So, he's almost 5 months, has the greyish hair coming in on his neck and face, has his first tooth loose(!!!) and doesn't mind at all. But, he was only taught a wee-wee command, and that was outside. He comes when I say "come here," and he "sits" 1/4 times, but we've only introduced that this week. Oh, and he weighed 3.5 lbs when he went to the vet last Tues. He's about 9 in. at the withers, 17 from head to tip of tail. Welcome to Yorkietalk mommy and HERO! Last edited by lucynfred; 01-09-2005 at 05:29 PM. Reason: welcome
