| Please Help!!?? I don't know where to post this...so I'm posting here...but I'm FREAKING out and hoping someone can give me advice? All day today as I've let the Yorkie babies outside, they kept going over to a tree and snifing. I didn't think anything of it since they always sniff around the yard. Well tonight as always, before bed I let them out once more and again they went over to this tree and were sniffing....after a few minutes (and I was cold and tired) I yelled at them to come inside, but the one totally ignorned me, just kept sniffing. I went over to her and that is when I FLIPPED OUT when I saw her leaning over a HUGE dead RAT...her head down sniffing it all over. All I could do was scream and jump up and down. I never saw a rat up that close and ewwwwwwwww it is more disgusting than I imagined. I'm still shivering and have goose bumps just writing this. Finally my dogs came in and they were both hysterical barking at me...I guess because they saw me jumping and screaming even after I got in the house. I threw them in the tub and gave them a quick bath but my question is...is that enough?? Should I use a disinfecting shampoo? and how do I know if they got any parasites from it? I'm not even sure how long it was there dead. My other huge fear is that what if they licked it...eewwwww! I fear this because these two Yorkies are always in my lap, sleeping in my bed and are extremely affectionate with loads of kisses every morning right on the lips. I just fear that we can all get sick? If I need to disinfect us all.... HOW? I don't know what to do and I'm sick to my stomach after seeing the Rat. Since it is 3AM I am going to go to sleep but will wash them again first thing in the AM and hopfully someone here can give me some advice or at least some peace of mind on how we can feel clean again. Tomorrow I am ripping out all the bedding and washing it in extra hot water and washing all my floors with bleach (I don't care) I want to feel sanitized. Anyway...sorry for ranting...I'm just too grossed out. Thanks in Advance! |

| I am more concerned about how the rat got killed. Any chance your dogs killed it?

| Do you think any of your neighbors could have put out rat poisoning? That would be a concern of mine. |

| I do not know if animal control would help you to see if it had any thing that would be harmful! I'd be like you- OMG! The dogs could of killed it, they are "ratters" But I think you would of heard a a lot of noise in your backyard if they killed it! I'd do a flea treatment- those things can have fleas bad. but it is winter!

| I would call the vet's office this morning. Vets are usually really good about staying on top of information about problems in their local area. They are always the first to know when a case of rabies is reported in town, and they would probably know if there have been any reports of rodent-related viruses, etc. I know fleas are usually the biggest threat from rats (because they carry most of the nastiness you hear about), and being February in Jersey, the flea population should be way down. If the vet tells you there's nothing to worry about, you might calm yourself by reminding yourself that cats kill rats/mice all the time, and even our beloved Yorkie breed was developed to hunt and kill rats. Anything you can think of that helps to "normalize" the experience will help diffuse some of the anxiety you're feeling about it. Imagine that the rat died from falling into a bucket of industrial disinfectant. Then you can focus on the important stuff, like making sure your neighbors haven't put out poison, and getting rid of the rat!

| I think calling your Vet and Animal Control is your best bet. You can wash them all you want but I am sure you were very very thorough last night. I would be more concerned with how the Rat died i.e. Rat Poison, and did the dogs lick it. Ask the vet for any possible signs, and how long before they would show any signs of poisoning and watch them very carefully. Good Luck. |

| Just BREATH... I would be careful not to over do it on the bleach. It's ok to wash the floors down but to much bleach might make them sick. Call the vet and see if there is anything to look for or test for. Ask them if Lepto might be a concern because rodents carry that. Brush their teeth and try to be calm around them, they have no idea why your so freaked out and might think you are mad at them! On the other hand....Ewwwww so gross!!! I understand you freak out completely!

| Rat poison would be a major concern if the dogs killed it. Rabies would also be even if they are vaccinated. Rats are soooooooooooo gross. I'd call your vet. They will help you.

| Big Thanks!!! UPDATE: THANK YOU all so much!!! You have NO IDEA how grossed out I still am. I have goose bumps the size of olives just sitting here thinking about it. I took your advice and called my Vet first thing this AM. I was reassured that I should have no worries. However....she was very happy that I bathed them right away. I can only imagine what my neighbors must have thought (if they saw all our lights on at that hour and screams coming from every room, yes! I was running and screaming like a nutcase!). Just seeing that horrid ugly critter was too much !! I am very sure that the babies did not kill the rat although I'm not sure if it was there more than one day . Even though we let them out in our own backyard we still never leave them unattended, not even for a second out there. So at least I have that peace of mind....but still....***shivers*** I feel bad for my poor little girl because I think she is really confused. She is so used to being hugged and kissed and is devastated! But I still haven't been able to give the babies their morning cuddle, because I can't stop thinking about how my little one was stradled over the rat.... sniffing it...****ewww*** ...okay...maybe just ONE more bath!!?? The gardener is coming today to get rid of it (my hubby is out of town) and once they leave I will go out and bleach the entire patio area. I guess living on a farm is out of the question for me... hehehe... Also noticed that our next door neighbors have a rodent trap on their retaining wall which is about 12 feet up from our yard, so it's not a concern for the Yorkies. It's a black plastic thingy that I thought trapped the rodents, but I guess not. So I'll have to do some investigating on that. I also decided to take BuggieMom's advice and think of it dying from 'falling into a bucket of industrial disinfectant' Thank you again for all your great advice and support with my anxieties and OCD issues ....okay...now I'm off to bathe the kids and then myself!! It's just too gross!!! |

| I see you are in New Jersey. You mentioned your neighbors retaining wall, which I assume you live on or by the water. Rats love to live around water and they swim. YUCK! We live on a Key on Sarasota Bay. We have citrus trees and they attract rats. They call them Citrus Rats here. They climb trees and can jump from branches to your roof etc. They hollow out much of the citrus outside. Our neighborhood is nice but we live right on the water. One night when my husband was out of town I went outside to let "Jasmine" our little Silky Terrier potty. It was dusk. She since has passed from old age RIP Jassy..... but anyway she suddenly darted toward our orange tree and I saw he was hugging something that she caught. EWWWW....It was one of those Citrus Rats. I screamed and she suddenly let go and it vanished through our hedge. I was so grossed out. Oh, just one thing that I thought was funny. On Siesta Key someone was in a restaurant by the village/beach area. This customer looking out at the pretty view of the water suddenly said, "Oh my gosh...is that a RAT!!!!!!" The waiter, thinking quickly said, "Oh no...not a RAT....it's a "Siesta Squirrel." |
