| When we first moved down here, Rika decided to dig up a fire ant nest. Poor thing was covered in them. Took us hours to get them all off of her. I hate them little buggers.

| Pesky No Good Fire Ants! Those things are bad...I can't stand them... We treat them as we see them...but should treat the entire yard...Like Villette said on a previous post.. Villette...what do you use again? Thanks..

apaprikao...that is scary - Here in Texas - they can kill - if not kill inflict MAJOR pain in any animal - You were so lucky and how scary for you ! so if you have a storm - no TV ? I've heard that about Direct TV - we have cable and hardly ever lose that unless we lost power.

Which reminds me of the other night - I came to the conclusion Chanel & Cheri & my cocker Tessa aren't the greatest Toad Hunters ... I took them out for their Nightly Toad Hunt in the dark...I'm sitting there watching them do circles lookin for toads....ALL Three girls are within 5 feet of me - and what jumps on my foot ? Oh yeah - a disgusting toad ! Right on ME.... Did my TOAD Hunters see it ? nope. I jumped up doing the freak dance and they all scattered lookin for the toad -except Chanel - (who found ALL the toads last summer) - and finally learned they taste NASTY. She's dancing on her hind legs for me to pick her up like she's saying "It's OK Mommy ....don't be scared - you can hold me !" lol... It was so cute - she KNEW I freaked and it didn't scare her - she was trying to make ME not scared. no...they are NOT good toad hunters...MOM is though

| This is a very good reminder because when I moved down here three years ago I was always on the look out for them. Well this year is my first time where i stepped on there hill and my foot was bitten five times and I couldnt' stop itching for days, I couldn't imagine if my little Mickey was bitten by these. So definetly keep a look out.

Donating YT 14K Club Member | it rained the day before yesterday for about 45 minutes...nice steady rain and then again last night for about an hour. I was nervous last night because it was coming down hard but we'd gone so long without rain, it all got soaked up.

| This year I used Over and Out Fire Ant Control. You put it out with a fertilizer spreader all over your lawn. It works great. Haven't had a fire ant mound yet, this year.

| I live in Austin and I use beneficial nematodes to control both fire ants and fleas. It is completely natural and does not harm pets or children. I've been using them for several years and have not had fleas or fire ants in my yard since beginning to use them. The application process is a bit tricky - you have to put water on them and strain the nematodes out of the soil they are in and then you have to spray them on the yard with a hand sprayer or hose end. Then you have to water them in and be sure to water the yard occasionally. Beneficial nematodes are microscopic organisms and they eat the fire ant and flea eggs so the colonies cannot live in your yard. You can buy them from any gardening center that sells organic products. In Austin you can get them from the Natural Gardener or Red Barn Nursery (and probably other places too, that I don't know about). Also, because of the warm winters in Austin, the nematodes often live through the winter and as such, only need to be reapplied every 2-3 years. I went 3 years the first time I used them and then I reapplied on the fourth year, just because I didn't want to take the chance of getting either fleas or fire ants in my yard. Of course, this doesn't mean that my Rowdy might not pick up fleas from walks or other animals - but it does mean that they won't set up housekeeping in my yard. I took the beneficial nematodes to my cousin in Oklahoma who was having problems with fire ants and they did the trick for her too so I'm pretty confident that they work in most any area with fire ants. |

| V, I had never heard of fire ants. I was in the Keys and love to take sunset pics. I was so excited because the sun was orange, a sailboat was in the pic and gulls and pelicans. I though I had died and gone to heaven. WRONG!!! I went to the other place. I was standing on top of a fire ant hill. Lordy, they ate me up. I used about a gallon of aloe and benzocaine before the itching stopped. I cannot imagine how bad it would be for our little younguns. |
