| Weening I'm glad that I got on this forum. My dog "Sissy" had her first litter of puppies on 6-11-05. She had 4 girls and 1 boy in her litter. Its going on 4.5 to 5 weeks and we haven't start weening the puppies yet. Mom is doing great feeding the puppies. From what I read in this forum, I should have been weening the puppies already. What is the scoop on weening? What type of food do you feed the puppies? Please give me measurements if you could. Dry? Wet? Looks like I need to go to the store...... Thanks in advance PS: This is our first and most likely our last for litters. Friends and family are going to receive the pups. John and Pam |

| Your puppies are adorable! My puppies will be 8 weeks on Sunday. The littlest one has weaned himself almost completely. The biggest eats very little and nurses the most. I put dry kibble out for them to begin with, the Royal Canine baby - it is tiny little triangles. Mom eats most of it. I added a little goats milk (3 tbl) and kept mom out. When she would go in, she would eat the food and clean up the mess and the babies. She still lets them nurse, but they eat more and more all the time. They are probably just getting teeth at 5 weeks, but they come in fast. I started feeding them cottage cheese (3 tbl) because some thought it might help their ears stand up. I also have 5 puppies.

| Your mom will let you know. She will lie down to feed when they are new. Then mom will sit up as they feed and want to be away from them for longer times. Then she will still feed but stand up. By the time she starts standing up you should have just started to smash premium dog kibble and mix with either puppy liq. formula or goats milk or Lactose-reduced cow's milk. Amd leave water out . I use the stainless steel bowls for birds, it hangs on the side and the puppies can't fall in the water. |

| The mommy definitly is the best way to ween. She will let you know by her actions. I had to hand raise my last litter there were four of them. When they were 4 weeks we started to introduce puppy food. I would presoak it in their formula, goat milk works. I would fed each of them 6-8 kernels, then let them have just milk. They always got their fill. I had to be more precise on what and how much I fed them because I needed to make sure all had the same amount and that none of the little ones were being pushed aside by the bigger ones. By the time my were 7 weeks they were weened off the bottle and drinking water. I still would presoak their food but they were up to 10 kernels. It doesn't look like a lot dry but when it is presoaked it is bigger and looks like a lot. Of course they digest it quicker than dry so I fed them every 3-4 hrs. Once their teeth cut in more I switched them to hard some of the time. I always left water down for them, usually they played in it though. Good luck and welcome to YT

| You already got good advice on weaning schedule and feeding. I use water bottles, the kind you hang on the ex-pen or crate, instead of bowls, they learn to use them very quickly because it's similar to nursing behavior and it's much cleaner than a bowl. |

| My pups are 5 weeks old today, they have teeth in and mom will sit to feed them, but not for long- she herself is eating less also. I have had water in the pen for a week now, they love it and drink well. I also take the puppy food, smash the pieces up, and soak them in hot water, so it is nice and soft... I tried goats milk to soak it, but the puppies snub their noses at it. I then leave that out for 1/2hr to 1 hr, keeping my eye on them- and keeping mom out because she will eat all their food. After I clean that dish (first I let mom eat the rest out of the cage the babies are in), I just take the crushed up dry puppy food (innova) and put it in their dish, so they have food available 24 hr a day. They eat the food both ways, but when mom is in with them, they eat from her also for a few minutes. Mom seems to be weaning them mostly- she isn't making as much milk, or letting them eat much from her... all puppies are still gaining weight and healthy. |
