| Neutered dog now lifts his leg??? Stomper was neutered at 4 months which is pretty darn early. He is now almost 8 months and he started lifting his leg to go potty. Is this normal for a neutered male dog? Perhaps it is male instinct and it is normal. Just wanted to see if others expereienced the same thing... Please let me know. Thanks, Kimberly

| Does he always do it or just occasionally? My male mostly squats but will lift his once in a while.

| I have 2 males that are neutered and they both lift their leg to potty when outside, when inside they squat on the puppy pads. Last edited by gyesso; 07-14-2005 at 08:19 PM. |

| My bro's Shar Pei was neutered very young and lifts. Stewie is not neutered and squats at nearly 9 months old. I hope he doesn't learn from the Shar Pei!

| Max never lifted his leg until he saw another male dog doing it> Once he saw another dog doing it he picked up the habit really quick and now Missy even tries to lift her leg on occasion after watching Max doing it so often. I wonder if its instict or a learned behaviour?

| IMO it is more instinct for them to lift their leg. Some are just slower at it than others. Some actually will need to see it done before they realize that that is what they need to do. Lifting their leg is a territorial thing. I have even read once the higher they can lift it the better for marking. I have a female and even though she squats she always has one hind leg in the air. Every time I see it I laugh.

| Well...Stomper has not been around any male dogs, so it was not learned. When he goes potty in the backyard, he always pees like a girl. But watch out on walks...HE IS A BOY LIFTING LEG MACHINE!!!! I personally think it is instinct and not learned. It is just a male thing...

| I think if he is lifting on walks, he is marking!

| Baxter does both. He still lifts his leg most of the time, but doesn't do it all over the place (like most males that are not neutered-you know, they go around and lift their legs every 30 seconds). It usually depends on when they are done-if they are done later (like Baxter-I think he was 6-7 months), there is a better chance of them lifting. But, since it was so early....it all depends on the dog though. THANK GOD they are all different.

| Well, Rowdy does both - squats and lifts his right leg up about 1/2 inch. It is soooo cute. He doesn't raise the leg every single time but about 3/4 of the time and it is getting more frequent. I think leg lifting is instinct. |

| I would say that's normal. My male is also fixed, but still hikes his leg and marks everything that he passes. If I didn't stay on the move, he would probably mark me too.
