| Hello Everybody I just got my first Yorkie. He is about 2 years old and is quite a little guy. I've always had dogs in the family, every thing from a Great Dane to a Min. Poodle. they all had their own personality and every one became a member of the family. Our last dog was a Westie and we lost her about two years ago to kidney failure. She was 14. I'm pretty sure it was due to the bad dog food that was going around. This happened about two months before it came out in the national media. The vet thought somebody may have poisned her but she was never by herself and when the news of the bad dogfood hit, we were pretty sure that' is what did it. As I said, this is our first Yorkie and even though he's only been here a day or so, I can see he has personality just waiting to bust out. He spent the first nite in bed with me. He doesn't like going outside and I don't blame him. It's too cold out there and we just got about 6" of snow. I cleared a place for him to do his business but he has always been an insiode dog so I probably have my work cut out for me. I just have a couple questions. First, this guy is so small his business doesn't really mess anything up and is easy to clean up. Just the same I'd like to get him trained. I was thinking about a litter box for inside and then after the weather gets decent I could move it outside and get him going outside. Anyone have any suggestions about that plan? He didn't eat at first so I made him a scrambled egg and put some ketchup on it and he wolfed that down with his canned dog food. Getting him to eat isn't a problem. He has done #1 with no problem but #2 hasn't happened yet. I think his new surroundings have him confused but if he doesn't go soon I'm thinking of getting him checked out. I had planned on doing that anyway until the roads got real bad. It may be a day or so before that happens. I've not been bothering him about going #2, I'm thinking maybe he'll sneak off and do it on his own. Right now that's not a problem. I know I sure wouldn't want to be doing my business out in the cold. Anybody that has any suggestions, please let me know. I want to get this little guy feeling at home ASAP. Thanks |

| Welcome to YT!! Glad to have you both here! What's your guy's name? Is he really 2 yrs old or was that a typo? I'm just confused, because some of the other things you said, made me think he was a new puppy. I'm not familiar with litter training, but if you use the search option on here, you should find some good info. I'm wondering how much you've changed his food from what he was eating before? What type of dog food are you feeding. You could very well be right that all the delay in poo comes from a change of environment.

| Welcome to YT! If he is 2 years old, where did he potty in his last home? You could certainly try the litter, but I don't have any experience with that, especially with an older guy. We use washable potty pads and love them. (Mine think snow might be fun to play in, but not to potty in!!) Thank goodness for tiny dogs with tiny messes.

| Aww, I'm sorry about your Westie. She lived a long life but that must have been terrible realizing she may have been taken from you early because of the tainted food. The scrambled eggs are fine for your yorkie but I would stop giving him ketchup. Tomatoes are bad for dogs. Welcome to YT!! You'll find a lot of great information here.

| The previous owner gave me the same food and treats the dog was eating. It consisted of Nutro turkey , some yogurt drops and he told me he liked Beggin Stips so I got them for him. I'm going to get him some dry food tomorrow. He's been here now a little over 24 hours and unless he went somewhere without me knowing, he hasn't gone yet. He has been with somebody almost every minute. If he did his business he did a good job of hiding it. He seems to be fitting in to the household well enough but he still probably misses his previous home. I'm thinking this will take a while for him to get used to his new home. We once rescued a Great Dane and it was a week before he got off his belly. He was really traumitized. They were going to put him down and the vet that worked at the shelter knew us and that we had a Great Dane, he called and then we had two. This little guy is nothing like that. He plays around a little and is warming up to us. He likes to lick faces and fingers. |

| hi and welcome! congrats on the new addition to your family. retraining an older dog cna take some time but you can do it. we got a peek at the age of 3 and she caught on pretty fast. yorkies can be fussy about weather, lacey wont go out if it is raining or snowing but once it stops she will go out.
