Default If your Yorkie wasn't $1K + ........

does that mean it's a red flag??

you guys have seen Guinness, I think he's a very handsome boy...... I wanted to see if they were going to have any more pups so I could stay with familiar territory. Their first litter wasn't at these $1K prices, but below. I wonder if they will go up.

I really liked them and am so happy with my little man........so I'm just curious, not really questioning his lineage

I don't think so. Sometimes you meet a breeder that worries more about placement than the $$. Sometimes they get to know you and want you to have their baby (that sounds funny doesn't it ) and want to give you an affordable price because they like you and they know they will be happy placing their baby there.

Both my girls I didn't pay $1k plus. Their breeder and I were friendly from another chat and are now more family because of the girls.

I think being on YT for a bit you know more and have the tools to see things that will be red flags in a breeder. So go back as though you were buying for the first time from them with your current knowledget that you picked up at YT and see if you would buy from them .

not necessarily. I know people that have bought from reputable show breeders for less than $1000. I think its probably harder to find one for under $1000 but it happens. Price doesn't always mean quality

i also do not think being under $1000 is necessarily a red flag

i am sure there are very good breeders out there who charge less than that for good quality, healthy furbabies!

Exactly. I think this is something that a lot of people believe though.

My two were both under $1,000 each and are healthy, great pets.

I paid $700 for Autumn but she was already 5 months old. The breeder just wanted her to have a nice home (there were some problems w/the breeders family and she was unable to place Autumn because she was taking car of her family - Autumn was a singleton)
When we got Blaze (same breeder they are half siblings) I pd $900 for them. My vet told me that I hit the jackpot twice and to consider myself lucky.
They breeder also told me that if any thing congenital happens to them in their lifetime she would replace them for me at no charge to me. I totally believe her considering her daugther lives only a few houses from me and her other daughter works w/my Best friend. She knows I could find her!

well, I probably would have done more research but I don't want to think TOO deeply into it cause I think I'm rather lucky. However, I want a little girl but doubt I could afford another if they are so high.

I believe that the area of the country from where you buy has a lot to do with price. Bottom line is, "whatever the market will bear." I live on the East Coast about an hour from Baltimore one way and an hour from Washington, DC the other and prices here are very steep. I bought my boy from Tennessee, drove 8 hours to get him one way and still paid way over $1,000.00 for him. My little girl came from PA, about 2 hours away and I paid just a little over $1,000.00 for her. I found out later if I'd driven a couple more hours up into PA I could have gotten the same quality dog for quite a bit less. While I don't believe either of the breeders were in in "just for the money", I do belive breeders will compete with the going price. I will never believe that price necessarily means quality, but Yorkies are so popular right now, unfortunately, we are all paying higher prices than we used to.

I am hi jacking here, sort of, sorry. We paid a lot for CoCo and a little less for Coffee, because his breeder was the honest kind she knew he would grow to be a BIG boy. Anyhow, she and I have kept in contact and she has seen my two on numerous occasions, and last year she offered to GIVE one of her Champions (here and in the UK) to me. She had retired him from the show ring and breeding, and wanted a forever home for him. ( He is Coffee's Grandfather)

I would obviously not have been allowed to use him as a stud, but she did not want him neutered for a while, just in case she decided to use him in her program one more time.

I was very honoured that she would do this, but after tons of thought, hubby and I declined her offer. We just didn't think it would be fair to the others as we take them everywhere and three would be too much to handle.

I often think about him, and wonder if I was stupid, turning down the best yorkie in the country ( at the time) He has sired many champions and is a really beautiful boy.. sigh... oh well.

Now there is a breeder who doesn't care about the $$

I think it has a LOT do do with what region of the country you live in. Price does not always = quality.....there are some very dishonest and money hungry people out there....

Neither of mine were $1K. I know yorkies usually go for about 1,000, give or take a couple hundred, but to me a red flag is if the price is really low (usually a scam) or very high, usually a BYB or puppymill

Prices DO vary greatly from region to region. I got Lexie (of course this was before I had found this great website!!) for $575.00 and she is CKC. It was a "hobby" breeder and Lex is as happy and healthy as ever!! But,ignorance was bliss and had I known about the potential health problems in yorkies, I would have done a ton more research. I did end up lucking out with my her. but that is not always the case. It pays to do your research ahead of time. High prices do not always equal high quality, and low prices do not mean something is necessarily wrong with the pup.

we only paid $600 for chloe, and other breeders in our area sell for that up to $850...thus far my Chloe is an awesome dog and shows the breeds standards well

Around here (Augusta GA) I have seen Yorkies anywhere from $500(!?) to over $1000. Of course there are a lot of puppy mills, this being the South and all, so you have to be very careful. Most of them are CKC, and not saying that a CKC dog can't make a good pet or be healthy, but many "breeders" in the area just use it because they could never get away with some of the things they do if they were registered with AKC. That's why I will stick with what I know and trust.

You take the time to research. And at times that might be a long time you can get a good dog for under $1k. But you might have to wait. Alot to do with area, size and gender. I have seen prices in our area $350 and up. That is alot of difference. $1200 for some not akc and not that cute. Its all in the looking and doing your homework from the site and making sure how you feel about different people.
