| New Thread for Stanford: Advice Needed Hi All- Well, soon after Stannie moved in, I came down with a terrible bout of the flu. Still feel lousy, but can get up and about again without sleeping 1/2 a day. Stanford seems to be doing well. I gave him a coal tar shampoo bath and conditioner treatment this morning, and he seemed to enjoy it. I found some raw spots on his neck, and put some Bactoderm on them. I also cleaned his ears with some Sulfodene, and got out a lot of dirt and some wax. He seemed a bit less itchy, and seems to have reduced the amount of time spent scratching his ears. He did very well with all this stuff. My question is: he needs to put on weight. So I have been feeding him small portions 4 times a day. Then I cut back to three times a day, same amount. He did well with this. Then today, it is the same amount 2 times a day. I am giving him about 3/4 of a cup total/day. This evening, about 9 pm, he began barking and spinning in the kitchen (this means "feed me"). He had already had his two servings for the day, so I informed him no more until the morning, and gave him a biscuit. He gobbled it down, and then barked for the next half hour, doing his little dance in the kitchen. I ignored him, and eventually he went up on the sofa with the big dog and went to sleep. I am under feeding? Overfeeding? He is having normal poo's, and no vomiting. I just don't want to get him in the habit of eating 4 times a day. Some sites say leave food out all the time, others say No, some say feed once a day, etc... HELP. Matthew |

| I think that since you are trying to get him to put some weight one, leaving food down all day would be a good option. How much does he weigh now and how old is he (sorry if I missed this in your earlier threads...)

| Would free feeding be an option for you? Or maybe go ahead and feed him 3x a day till you get his weight up. The amount of food youre feeding him sounds good..Cali eats about 1/4 cup 2x a day. The type of food should also be taken into account. What's he on? With more fillers, hell get hungry quicker..

| I think I would do the free feeding. Murfee has done that all his 4 years and does great with it. Good luck with your new little sweetie. Glad you are feeling better.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | I'd go with free feeding too since you want him to gain - there's also some vitamins you can give him and GOOD LUCK .... have you treated his ears for mites ? He may have them if he's scratching them alot hope you both feel better... |
