| Should I or shouldn't I I have been pondering the thought of breeding my Yorkie. Not now, bit maybe in a year or so. I have heard alot of people talking down on people who have never bread a dog before. So maybe one of you could give me some positive feedback on whether I should or shouldn't. I have a female and she is beautiful. She is CKC registered and my cousin has a AKC registered male. How high is the percentage rate of loosing your own dog? I don't know if it would be worth it to me to take the chance. Anyone have any advice? |

Donating YT 7000 Club Member | I'm not a breeder, but I want to say kudos to you for coming here to ask for help! My only advice would be to find a really good vet, and go to them and get her tested for LP, liver shunt, collapsing trachea, etc., because these are all hereditary trates and you don't want either parent to pass them on to their offspring! Also make sure you read, read, read and absorb all the knowledge you can about breeding. Good luck!

| I suggest checking out the Breeder forum...there is some useful info there. There is a thread right now with pros and cons of breeding and one with info about health screening. Breeding is a huge responsibility. I suggest finding a mentor that has a lot of knowledge and experience with yorkies.

| Good luck if you decide to do it, breeding is not for me..but, as far as never doing it, for everyone that breeds, there is a first time..No one ever goes in to it the first time knowing exactly what they're doing |

| I don't think people on YT are against breeding. It is just hard to see soooo many millions of dogs euthanized yearly that are already in shelters. It is also not a good idea to breed a dog without doing genetic testing and making sure their lines are clear of ls, lp, ct... I don't think it's wrong to breed as long as it is done correctly. Any puppy that can't find a home a responsible breeder would be more than willing to keep. Yorkies are so overbred and diseased now that testing needs to be done. If people researched (like you are now) and took their time and did it the right way I don't think too many people would say it is wrong...

| I agree with everything said here....and will also add that if you are not emotionally prepared for everything that can happen (including losing your beloved pet) then don't do it. Although you can take every precaution, there is never any guarantee that something won't go wrong. I'm not trying to be pessimistic or to discourage you, but in reality it is a possibility. I don't know your personality, so am not talking about you personally, but some people are just simply not equipped to deal with this. |
