| HELP--my yorkie wakes me up all night I have a 6.5 month-old male yorkie. We have had him since October and love him a lot, but he WILL NOT let us sleep at night, and it's killing us. We've read the books, but they're no help. We put him in his crate at bedtime and make sure he's gone potty just before. Sometimes he whines, sometimes he sleeps for an hour and then whines. We tried letting him stay in there all night, but he 1. whines the whole time and/or 2. gets so upset he poops and rolls in it. We've tried letting him in the bed, which is what he wants, but he still runs around the bed all night and wakes us up. He runs around until we're forced to take him out. We cut off his food and water earlier and earlier, but he still wants to go once or twice a night--every night. I know they're social and need to sleep in the same room with us, but we have started putting him in the guest bathroom where we keep him when we're working because we just need to sleep so badly. He hates it. I love him, but I'm SO tired and frustrated. HELP!!!!!! |

| Oh, hang tight. You've definatly got a Yorkie though. He's still a baby, and you've got a little ways to go. At that age, mine still had to potty in the night time too. Can you play and run around the house with him just before bed time? Have you tried the crate next to your bed? And when he starts to fuss bring him to do potty? |

| Thank, you all! I really appreciate the help. We have tried wearing him out, but I wasn't sure when he'd had too much. He kind of pants and breathes heavy and sticks his tongue out after just a few rounds of "toss the ball." Did this get better as your dogs got older, too? When did they stop? How long do you think we should exercise him? I REALLY appreciate this and I'm glad I found this great site! |

You may be surprised to find out just how much exercise it takes to wear these little guys out! Have you seen the 'yorkie on the treadmill' video?? They really require quite intense exercise (watching for any signs of hypoglycemia, of course) He's a solo dog, I take it? Does he have friends to play with? You need to do very active games with them, not just always quiet them down with chewy treats, even though that is always soooo much easier! What are you doing with him for activities now? We can help with some suggestions if you need them, Last weekend I was in bed with bronchitis for two days, and by that 2nd night, Purl was up all night chewing on my hair (both cute and annoying ) She just had too much energy in her. | Something to keep in mind... is that if they are sleeping all day, then they'll probably be up all night. When you guys get home, he should be feed, taken for a walk (if you can) and played with. I know when I get home sometimes, all Meka wants to do is sit on my lap and fall asleep. And though its cute, it created a problem when I was ready for bed and she was now wide awake. So I make sure that she's up and playing until its time for us to go to bed. We also had to get her use to commands... like GO TO BED, or NIGHT NIGHT TIME that help her know its time to go to sleep...and even if she's not sleep right away, she knows to stay in that bed. He's still young, but be persistant and dominant... Think your lil guy might think he's the leader of the pack and you'll need to change that to make progress with him.... Oh... and to YT

| This is probably going to sound weird, but what food are you feeding him? Many low quality foods have numerous ingredients that not only are weird, but create a hyper, restless dog. We play with Ranger from the second I get home (between 4 and 5) until the minute we go to bed. No naps, no resting, just play play play. He just turned 7 months, but we have been doing this for months now. We also take all three dogs on long walks (at least 45min) and I never carry him on those walks. I need him tired or he wakes us up in the middle of the night. I sounds like your pup just has too much pent-up energy. I wouldn't worry about doing too much with him, at 6.5 months he is almost structurally done growing and he needs to start getting regular exercise, which will keep him healthy for life. Good luck!!!!!!

| Ha! It makes me feel so much better to know there are other people who have had this problem. We try to take him for walks, but he usually cries the whole time and it's pretty sad. He is at least leash trained, though. We like to wear him out by throwing his toys across the room and he runs for them, or we drag them across the floor and he chases them. I think the best we've thought of so far when my husband and I throw a toy across the room at each other and Cricket runs between us. We let him have the toy a little here and there so he doesn't get frustrated. Any other good tucker-em-out games, new friends? |

| Oh, and for food we give him that Blue stuff for little dogs. It's organic, yadda-yadda, and we picked it because our book said to give him food that has meat product, not corn or wheat, as a first ingredient. We feed him twice a day--at 7:30 a.m. and at about 6:00 p.m. But his poo schedule is also all over the place--is that normal? How many times a day do your dogs go twosie? Sorry if these are newbie questions. This is my first-ever dog!!! |

| Try leaving a radio on at night for him..is he pee pad trained or outside? If he's pee pad trained, maybe try an xpen.. |
