| NEW Member with a NEW PUPPY! Hi! I’m a new member and we just got our first Yorkie puppy, Mariah. We’ve had her for two weeks and she will be 10 weeks old this Sat. We hadn’t planned on getting a new puppy but my 12 yr old daughter slept at her friend’s house. They had a new litter and she fell in love with one of the puppies. She was very persistent. She kept saying to us “you can’t help who you fall in love with and I’m in love with this puppy”. I was so nervous to bring such a little puppy home but she is doing so great! We have her in our big bathroom off my bedroom with a gate up. We originally put her pee-pad near the door and her bed and kennel further in the room…but she would curl up pathetically next to the gate to sleep. As soon as we moved her bed and kennel closer to the door (so she could still see us) she started sleeping in them regularly. She actually goes all by herself into her kennel and sleeps in there sometimes. We purposely have never gone in by her when she whines (we didn’t want to teach her to whine for our attention). After the first few nights she went to bed and slept so well. We “put her to bed” each night by turning on a nightlight for her, turning off all the big lights, giving her a cuddle and setting her on her bed…while we tell her it’s night-time. We rarely ever hear a peep from her! She always wakes up in the early hours…anywhere from 5:00 – 7:00 am and goes potty. Sometimes she whines for just a few seconds…almost to ask “is it time to get up yet?” and then goes right back to sleep again. She also does this if we get up to get a drink, etc. but it’s only for a few seconds. My husband works nights and he even sleeps in our bedroom during the day! We have turned our bedroom into our new living room. We spend the majority of our time when we’re home hanging out there so we can spend as much time as possible with her/near her. We also let her loose in the bedroom when we can watch her closely. We may move her to the kitchen when she is older. We have to train her to go on a pee-pad. We are at work/school all day and she is too young to crate all day long. We were so proud when we brought her home…we had her “room” all set up and she immediately sniffed all around and then walked to her pad and went pee on it! But since then it is definitely hit and miss. I would love any advice on how to get her trained to always go on the pee-pad. We didn’t put newspaper down and I’d be concerned about doing that as she will definitely chew it up! We had the pee-pad in one spot but she kept going consistently in another area (even though we had cleaned well there) so we added a second pee pad. She definitely seems to now pee consistently on both the pads but now she is also pooping near her bed and crate! I’m thinking about adding a 3rd pad where she is pooping. I thought if we could get her to consistently go on just the pads we could slowly inch the pads nearer to each other and then eventually she would be going on one pad! LOL! Anybody think this might work? We trained our other dog to go on pee-pads until we felt she was old enough to be in a crate for a few hours at a time. Once we used a crate for her, she was potty trained in days. Now she is 7 yrs old and in a crate all day while we are at work/school. She doesn’t even have to go potty when we first let her out – she just wants attention. Our other dog, a Bischon named Angel, is afraid of the puppy. If we let the puppy near Angel, she is like the energizer bunny and just runs and runs after Angel. So far Angel can jump up on the bed to get away. My only concern is that if she got cornered and had no place to run – I don’t know what she would do. Any tips on helping them to get to know each other would be appreciated! I do have some questions. We give our Bischon Milkbone Small Dog Crunch Treats and Dingo’s as treats. Do you think that these would be ok for our new puppy too? I would appreciate any recommendations on good treats for her and good chew toys. I don’t want to give her anything that will make her sick. This is our first experience with a Yorkie so any advice on our new puppy would be appreciated! Sorry for the looong post. THANKS for all your help! |

| Welcome to YT. Yorkies are wonderful little doggies and very smart, too. Your new puppy is very young and I wouldn't be concerned with giving her "treats" just yet. It doesn't take a lot of food for one so young and I would worry about her filling up on treats and not eating enough real food. You just have to be the judge there. I gave mine bully sticks when she started teething. She chewed them mercilessly during that time, but shows little interest now. I was able to be home with mine when it was housebreaking time, so I won't be much help for you. I used little pieces of cheese to reward her and it worked great. Enjoy your new yorkie. They are very social puppies and most love to be around people. Mine even comes to work with me sometimes.

| Congratualations and welcome..I do have one suggestion though, although she's only 10 weeks now, she will start chewing..(most of them do, some not as bad as others), but, my suggestion is if you can, to get an xpen for her, this way, if she does end up being a chewer, it will save you money from having to buy new "this and that".. |

| Congrats and Welcome to YT! This is the place to be for your new baby! I think the xpen is a great idea. Bella didnt get treats for the first year I wanted her to have nutrient dense foods since she didnt eat much. Now she gets Bullysticks and homemade treats! |

| Congratulations and welcome from one newbie to another! It sounds like you are off to a good start. One suggestion I'd make is to be careful what you are cleaning up the accidents with. I'm sure you already know since you've trained another dog recently, that you shouldn't use household cleaners with ammonia in them to clean up pet accidents. The ammonia in the cleaners tells the dog "pee here!". The only thing I can think of to help with helping your older dog to adjust would be to only expose the older dog to the puppy after you have thoroughly tired the puppy out. I think that might help if the puppy is all worn out. The puppy may not get *quite* as crazy that way which could help make your older dog more comfortable. Good luck. I'll look forward to reading about your progress! p.s. Do you have any pics of your baby? I'd love to see them! |

YT Addict | It seems little yorkies can pull at little girls hearts. that is how we got sassy. my granddaughter had begged for one for over 6 months she is 11 and we jsut were not sure if she was ready so we told her if she saved her money we would pay half. she saved every dime she could find and had a jar marked sassy's funds, yes she named her also before we even told her we would get one. it was getting close to christmas and we show just how much she wanted one and we decided it was time to go ahead and buy one. now we have had sassy since nov and we would not take a millon dollars for her. she has brought a lot of joy to our family and would not know what to do if any thing happened

| Thanks! I really appreciate the Welcome! Thanks for the GREAT tips. I will have to check to see what the cleaner all has in it - it's been so long since we had a puppy. I'm using Lysol Kitchen Cleaner - it's actually what we use to wash off our table and counters (it's safe and it doesn't need to be rinsed). It's a great idea to bring the puppy by Angel when she's tired out (why didn't I think of that LOL). She sometimes falls asleep in our arms or laying on us...maybe we could bring Angel by her then. I was planning on giving her treats only when we see her doing something great like going potty on the pee-pad. I think what I may do is break apart the treat and give her a crumb at a time (instead of the whole treat). I definitely don't want her "filling up" on treats instead of the nutritous food she needs. I have to admit it really freaked me out at first how small she is. "Owned by Sassy" - what a cute name! My daughter also used her savings for the puppy. That's how we really knew she was serious. She is not a spender (at least not with her own money)! She has truly stepped up on caring for the puppy. She does everything - from feeding to mopping the floor and cleaning up the mess. She's doing amazing with Mariah. My husband and I took getting a puppy very seriously - we know it's truly like having another child! I hate to sound so stupid but...what is an xpen? Is it similar to a crate only bigger? I'm wondering if that might be better then our bathroom in the long run. We want to keep her safe while we are not home with her. And until we potty-train her, I don't want her to have the run of the house. I tried to attach pics - we'll see if it worked! THANKS! |
