YT Addict | I need help!! Hello all, I'm been having a problem with Teddy. He's a perfect angel with me and with my grandmother, but with my grandfather he is horrible. He has now taken to biting him and this worries me because this is not his typical behavior. He is so friendly that I have to pull him off of strangers on the street because he wants to wag his tail and run up to them so they can pet him. My grandfather, on the other hand, has done a lot to cause teddy to have this type of behavior. He has thrown newspaper, shoes, socks, and tried to spank him with the newspaper. Plus, he doesn't like dogs period, and I think this is something Teddy can sense. They haven't gotten along, and things have gotten worse from there. I've only been at my grandparents since Sept of last year. I moved in so I can take care of them but now I worry that since I am going to law school in the fall, I won't be able to leave Teddy out. He barks at my grandfather just for being in the same room. It's really weird, because he's nice with everyone else. I just don't know if I should go ahead and move out? But if I do, who's going to look after my grandparents? But then again, I hate leaving Teddy in my room, just so he won't encounter my grandfather! I don't know what to do!!!

| I dont know if anything will work unless ur grandfather is willing. I am no dog expert but I did watch an episode on the dog whisperer with somewhat of the same problem, and the grandmother had to be willing to be "friends" with the dog. To train Teddy to be "nice" while your grandfather is still being abusive will just be a waste of time and money. JMO, good luck though. I also know that keeping Teddy locked in your room all day so that he doesnt have any encounters with grandpa must be stressful for you as well. So sorry for you and Teddy. Again, good luck!

YT Addict | Thanks! I'm not sure exactly what to do. I'm pretty sure I will have to move out. Now all, I have to do is wait to find out what law school I got into so I can start looking for an apartment.

YT 2000 Club Member | I'm no expert and I won't pretend to be. Simply said, I'd move out. Our furkids are like our skin kids, if someone treated my skin kids like that, I'd move. To me, treating a furkid like that is the same thing, I'd move.

| Since your grandparents are so sick and probably need you terribly maybe you could tell them what you are planning if things dont change with your grandfather. Who will take care of them if you arent there? Can and will they go into a nursing home? This is a tough situation Im sure...where are your parents...can they take care of them? Dawn |

| Could you or someone else talk to your grandfather. Tell him that he is a nice dog, but picks up on him not liking him. Maybe he could give him treats once a day- play ball with him. Maybe a friend of his is needed to bring it up! They could be comfort to each other. Maybe tell Gramps, you need him to help watch your boy while at school! Gramps has to want to try. If nothing else- a daycare- or someone to come in and walk him while you are gone! Good luck |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Get your grandfather a trainer. You can hire a behaviorist for your dog for $200 an hour. And the behaviorist is capable of treating abnormal behavior. But biting someone who throws things at you and spanks you is not abnormal behavior. It's self-defense. There's nothing "weird" about it. It's an impossible situation as long as your grandfather is behaving like that. Sorry, wish I could help. I know you wouldn't have moved in if you didn't love them very much.
