Default Vaccination + puppy class question

Morning everyone,

Lexi & Oliver met their trainer yesterday and got along really well with her. She wanted me to get them into puppy kindergarten after their second round of shots (July 29, 12 wks old). She said that it isn't imperative that they have their third round of shots as the class is really small (6 pups including mine) and everything is bleached/cleaned really well before each class. I should add that her reasoning behind this is that puppies have a "socialization window" that pretty much ends around 16 weeks, and that its really important to get puppies out and interacting with new people & pups during that window. So what do you guys think?

Should I wait until they get their third round of shots and possibly miss out on the socialization window? Or do you think its ok to get them in after their second round? They mainly pick up illnesses through other dog's poop, right? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I don't know...Maximus' trainer made everyone have ALL their shots and even recommended Bortadella (kennel cough)...because he said that soo many dogs go in and out that usually 1 in the class catches it and then they are forced to a) miss a class or get sick after and the parents get mad. I would say our Petsmart is immaculate but accidents do happen and I wouldn't take the chance IMO...that is why I waited for Maximus to finish....and then I procrastinated...lol, so at 16 weeks he should of started instead of 20...but they said until 6-7 months they are sponging everything up...then they go into the rebellious stage!!!..Good Luck and hope all goes well!! Oh!! and we only have 3 pups!!!

They should have ALL thier shots because there are airborne things that they can catch. Parvo sometimes isn't killed by bleach. Kennel cough can live a long time too. Just because they bleach/clean everything doesn't mean that they do all the walls and doors and all that stuff.

Sorry but my opinion is, is that you are risking your pups safety by not having him completely up on shots before taking the class. I jsut got licensed to train and I know in all my paperwork and classes we will not take a pup that isn't totally done with everything.

I am not a vet or a trainer, and I will admit that I am not a big fan of vaccines for dogs after the research I have done, but I think two rounds of shots are enough protection imo.

If you trust your trainer I would go with what she advises. If you research the vaccines on the internet they are not really protecting against much anyway and I read that they are not even susceptible to Parvo after 8 weeks, so I would do the reading and research yourself on the value of that third round of shots and then you can make an educated personal decision. You are obviously weighing the risk of an illess with his need to gain th necessary socialization and training needed for his life as your companion.

I had a rottie that was almost a year old get parvo. In all honesty a dog can get parvo at any age, it just depends on how healthy the imune system is.

Personally I would wait until after the 3rd shot and rabies vaccination.

I don't put mine outside until 1 week after the 2nd shot at 12 weeks. Not even in my own yard.

Are the classes held in a private facility as opposed to say, classes at Pet mart? I don't care what they say about disenfecting the primises if there are sick dogs walking there even 1X a month, the puppies are at risk. If someone thinks their dog needs training so badly before the pet gets all of the shots, then I would suggest a personal trainer come to the house..JMO
