| 2 Weeks and counting Hi, Well a little about myself first. Im sure im a tid bit out of place, considering "many" yorkie owners serious enough to join a forum would most likely be females, none-the-less here i am. I am a forum junkie, mostly consisting of game/pc tech boards. With that out of the way, im a firefighter from southwest louisiana and my wife, whom im dying to sweep off her feet with a "suprise", is a doglover. To make a long story short: We dated, she moved 1000 miles away, we kept dating, 2 years passed, she moved back, we married, brought a dog back, and we didn't have the room..... So technically i owe her another dog. She really likes yorkies, sooooooo...... im gonna suprise her in 2 weeks with a 12 week little girl. I want to make a connection with a community to share our experience and get/give any advice if needed. So here i am. First of all we live in an apartment. I work 24hr shifts, so sometimes the dog would be home alone from 7:30am to 5:30pm. Am i going to be able to meet the feeding requirements. Is the dog gonna be mad and resentful for us leaving her. Or do i just get a big Xpen, load the food bowl up with hard food, and put a pee pad? Other than these questions, im pretty set. Thanks btw, i was crackn up at some of the stories on this board...LOL |

| Congrats on the new baby. I'm sure your wife will be as thrilled as I was when I found out my husband was getting me one!! I've only had her 4 days, but she is sooooo spoiled...(I think my husband is a little jealous). Congrats again. Emily & Callie |

| Hi, welcome aboard! Boy, is your wife gonna be happy, happy, happy! Puppies adjust and you will too! Maybe sometimes you can take her to work - make her a mascot (who says only dalmations can be fire dogs!) This is a great place!

| Welcome! I work too! And I leave our dog alone for those hours too (7:30-5:30) (since day one basically) So don't worry. It will be an adjustment. She will not like it in the beginning but the puppy will get used to it. (you may never, but they will eventually ) You've got the right idea. Just get an xpen. Put food and water on end, a pee pad on a another, some bedding with toys on another and your good to go.... Odds are in the beginning your puppy won't eat much when you are not home, so just make sure that when you are home that they do eat! The beginning will be the hardest! So just stick with it! Be consistent. It is no different than having a little baby And we are all here to help! Let us know how things go when you get the puppy! |

| Welcome! It's great to have both males and females on here. I think one of the best things you can do is get the pup right when you have one of those weeks off to help her get acclimated and comfortable with you. Yorkies are a great choice! Congrats and don't be a stranger. |

| Best present my hubby ever got me was my two puppies. We left to get one and came home with two. It has been wonderful! They kept each other company from the beginning. My husband, who always hated small yappy dogs, loves them to death. He jumps down on the floor when he walks in the door. The pups are always there waiting, they hear his car come up. (And they are not yappy, we never really let them bark much, right from the beginning.) I know your wife will be so excited

| Welcome to YT. Your wife is going to be thrilled. She may even quit work to be with the baby. Yorkies love people contact, so your baby is not going to like being alone. It's going to make training a lot harder, but eventually will work out. The x-pen is a great idea. Bed, toys, food and water at one end and wee wee pad at the other is a great idea. We bought one from Petsmart for Maggie. When I would be mowing the lawn, I would put her in it. When she was little, she could go through the squares on a chain link fence, so the x-pen was a life saver. Good Luck and Holler Anytime.

| Hello Welcome. My husband just retired from the Jacksonville, Fl Fire Dept after 38 years. I retired 5 years ago and got my yorkies about one year ago, give or take a month or two. Your wife and you are going to be delighted with your choice of a yorkie. I never had one and now I would never not have one. In fact, I got another one when Chloe was 6 months old. I've been a member of this website just a few weeks but have learned a tremendous amount. I got a book on yorkies and found it extremely helpful, to this day. It's called Your Yorkshire Terrier's Life but am sure there are many others. I recommend also that someone take a few days off at the beginning or get your puppy on Fri so there is someone with him/her for a few days in a row. Although I believe they are fine with being alone, they do love attention and will need transition security. If your puppy does not come with Nutrical, buy some or Karo syrup. Often, especially tinies, get hypoglycemic quickly and you will want it on hand. I'm sure your breeder will tell you, buy high quality food, I like dry food, keep it out 24/7 along with water. Have fun |

| Welcome. We men are definitely a minority here but we are here. I think a man actually started this board. Anyway I live in an apartment too but I am home all day. I work from home. A new dog in a new environment will probably have some issues when being left all day alone. To curb seperation anxiety this is what I did. I crate train my dog so when she was in the crate I would cover it so she could barely see out of it. Do this while you are home so she knows you are there but just can't see you that good. This actually curbed the dreaded whining a great deal and she never goes crazy anymore when we do have to leave her for a few hours. I feed my dog twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening so you will be feeding her enough. I would suggest you don't leave food out all day but a lot of people here do that and you can't tell them otherwise. It actually teaches them that they will always be able to get food anytime and it makes potty training them that much harder because you never know when they have eaten. I would try the playpen idea but I don't think that will curb accidents. She will probably go wherever she pleases until you can train her. I had my yorkie now for 5 weeks and I'm so glad that I got some solid advice. A lot of the advice here is good but a lot of it seems to be to let the yorkie run the roost and be cute and wish for the best. My yorkie doesn't have accidents anymore, has almost stopped her whining, has lost her separation anxiety all in 5 weeks. Whatever you do, train your yorkie and you will have a better time with her.

| I was in school when we got our Yorkie 2 years ago. We put her in a wire pen that could hold a x-large dog. We stuck a peepad in the back and had a water bottle hanging on the side. I alos would cover her cage when it was bed time and her rest time. She always felt secure that way. I would even leave the radio on so she wouldn't feel lonely. Good luck your wife is going to love you.

| Wow!! Nice to see all the replies. Thanks for the info. My wife has no idea and i can't hardly stand it!! It will be a nice suprise. About the dalmations..........Being a firefighter it did cross my mind, but they are deaf, which is why they go good on Fire trucks-- the sirens don't hurt their ears, and i heard they are a hand full and not good for apartments. Its very nice to see this community so lively. Me and a couple friends have been running a board on gaming for 3 years now. Needless to say, it's not this lively. Im going to the breeders house today to take a peak and maybe ill get a couple pictures to post. Thanks again |
