| Still getting familiar with all the correct terms... so please forgive me... But, what does "tie" mean? You asked, when do you start counting to the 10th day? Curious on why and what that means? None the less, my Meka's parts were swollen for a week and a half before she started to bleed... Then that continued for another week and a half....

| To "tie" means to actually have them literally tied during intercourse. The genitals "tie" together in a way that they are stuck together for a period of time (sometimes lasting up to 45 minutes) to ensure everything goes 'according to plan.' Counting to the 10th days just means the female will be ready to breed with a male and have a likely, successful pregnancy. Last edited by dani23d; 01-14-2008 at 12:12 PM. |

| i really really hate to say this but if you do not know when to start counting days or when they are in standing heat, should you really be breeding her? it really scares me when i see someone breeding who hasn't done the proper studding of the breed, breeding, history, genetics and health. the penis has a bulb-like dilation at the base of the penis, which fills with blood and holds the penis within the vagina during intercourse. Within the penis is a bone that maintains the shape and direction of this organ during mating. this is the tie. your bitch may have a silent heat in which blood would be very hard to detect especially when she is cleaning herself constantly. this is when you need to know when she is in standing heat. the guide is to count 10 days after the first sign of blood but sometimes this can be missed. also this is just a generic way of determine cycles. some bitches will ovulate as early as 5 days and some as many as 14 days. the best way to determine this is to go to your vet and have a smear done to determine when she is ovulating. there are many articles on the internet about breeding. i also suggest get books on this as well. i am sorry if i came off strong but i just wanted you to know the seriousness of this. not being educated about breeding could mean life and death to puppies or mother. i wish you all of the luck in the world and hope you have a smooth whelping experience.

I agree the statement was uncalled for, that's why I'm so hesitant to ask any questions on this forum re: breeding. I read a lot and I get the impression that some people think that only "professional" breeders should be allowed to breed. That's like saying only doctors should be allowed to have kids. This is why we turn to our vets and ask questions of those who have experience. I am very torn on whether to Breed my Bella (down the road) because I would love one of her pups but her health is my first concern and to be honest it's a huge responsibility that I do not take lightly and I need to be sure that I'm ready to take it on. I wish people would stop being so darn judgmental. Please know that not everyone on this site is like that. I wish you the best

| I would like to know also. What did Lisa say that came across as bullying? I would be grateful to any breeder for answering my questions and I would want them to tell me if maybe I wasn't doing something quite right. I would rather that then have complications with the pregnancy.

Thanks for the advice, and reading words is hard because there is no tone or fluction in voice so I accept your apology.....I just want to ask as many questions as possible so I can make sure I know whats going on even if I know the answer its better to get the same answer from different people....

| The first statement asking "should you really be breeding her?" That's very harsh and hurtful. Towards the end of your reply you even stated that your words were "strong" which shows me that you know you were being harsh. If you didn't want to sound harsh then why not just delete the first statement before submitting it? I understand your concern but you're assuming she hasn't done any research. Just because she isn't sure what day she should actually start the breeding process doesn't mean she hasn't done plenty of research as to size/genetics of the stud, risks of the pregnancy, etc. It's not fair to the OP to make such assumptions. It's not like she's been trying to force her baby to tie (if that's the correct term) before asking the question, she's asking first which is exactly what she should be doing.
