Default When taking your babies in public...

I cannot believe some of the things I read on here, in the paper, see in the news about these little dogs being stolen, or taken or owners being assaulted for their precious babies. It sickens me that you have to always be on the watch for your babies because they could be STOLEN! When I was growing up we had dogs and they were NEVER even on a leash or anything, they roamed the neighborhood and we never had to fear someone STEALING your dog! GGEEEZZZZ

Anyways, my point is.... TETHER your babies to you when you take them out in public. ALWAYS put a harness and leash on them when you are out. Even just in the car make sure its on them! Someone here said that a woman reached into her car to pet her baby, that woman could have tried to snatch the baby from her and might have gotten away!! If you keep a leash on your babies and firm in your grasp or tied to your belt loop or something then you have a better chance of 'keeping' your baby should anyone TRY to snatch them!

I cannot stress ths enough!! Do not leave the house w/o something on your baby that keeps him/her close to you and hard to take or steal! I always have my babies leashes wrapped around my hand a few times or tied to my belt loop just in case! I would just be beside myself in grief if anything happened to them!

Also do not advertise on you vehicles or houses that you have yorkies! That is a breakin waiting to happen Its soooo sad that we must live like this!

I usu do not have Gypsy on a leash, just carry her every where. This is going to change.
I also worry about the face books and pages we do for our babies. If we have our true names on there, it would not be hard to find out where someone lived.

Ours don't go out in public much, but our groomer says everyone makes comments on them when they are there. You can never be too careful.

That is great advice. I'm sure we all think that it won't happen to us, but if it does one day and we are prepared so that our baby doesn't end up getting taken we won't be learning the hard way. Keep those babies on you, tied to you... tied to your car seat

Great advice!! Another tip for keeping our babies safe is when we have deliveries made or in home repairs ..I try to keep Nathan out of site playing quietly if some one is in to make repairs or if that isn't possible which is nine times out of ten!! I always say i am babysitting and owner on way to get him..because people always comment!! Given I live out in the country I am isolated somewhat and if some one knew i had a yorkie they could try to break in..Heaven forbid!! I would just die!!!!!

Great ideas!! Even though I don't take mine out very often, it just made me sick to think something could happen like what happened to Kim and Lexie at Petsmart. Scary world we live in now.

Cup Out In Public

I agree with all the ideas. I had wanted to get a "Yorkie"Decal on my car. But NOT Now. they will know I have them. I have them on leases but I don't want any one to know I even have one. Execpt my family.

I have 2-crates in the back seat. One is for Jack,. and one is for Alphie I even feel like someone will break in and see if there are dogs in there.

What A shame....

14 years ago, I was walking along a beach in Cornwall (UK) with my then 1 year old Yorkie, Heidi. A horse came cantering towards us and she took off, petrified. I did my best to follow her, but soon she was a tiny speck in the distance and i lost sight of her. I was in such a state scouring the beach and in floods of tears. after half an hour or more i saw an old couple coming towards me, the old guy was holding something in his arms, it was Heidi, frightened and soaking wet!! it turns out, in her panic to escape the monster (the horse!) she had tried to cross the gannel river that runs out to sea and had got swept along by the strong current! the old guy and his wife had been crossing the bridge and had seen my little Heidi struggling to cross and he had bent down and fished her out! and then tried looking for the owner. There are still some good people left in this world, I will always be thankful to that couple, and i had 14 long happy years with my 'first' baby.

kezza its wonderful to hear something like that! I too got REALLY lucky with one of my current babies! My brother and I drove to VA to visit my other brother when we found out he was being sent to Iraq. It was a last min trip so we took the dogs! My boys were 13 months old at the time. Well we out one night to a club and my little bro met some people who worked on his base at the club and invited them back to the house to party! Well I went to sleep eventually in the living room on the floor in a sleeping bag and both my babies were in the bag with me. I woke up at 7am with a woman banging on the sliding glass door and I looked up and she was holding one of my babies! I jumped up, opened the door and grabbed him and she said that her friend found him in the parking lot huddled under a car! She remembered seeing me come in with them and brought him back to me! Apparently the only thing I could think of is, after I fell asleep one of my babies got out of the bag and when one of the 'party people' left in the middle of the night, he must have gone out the door! I am sooooooo GRATEFUL that I still have my baby! God knows what could have happened. It was really that lesson that taught me to NEVER let them out of my sight for a second and to never trust that ANYONE will worry or watch them as well as I will!

Thumbs up This is a good thread

I think keeping the harness and leash on is a great idea. I have done this because when chewy was a baby and my daughter Aubrey had him in her arms we had a few times where people would come close to pet him...(We thought) but they grabbed him right out of her arms instead! We had to figure out what we could do about this!!!! So the leash works, we have a front pack to hold our babies in and when people come rushing in at us we step back and it sends a message to not come to close! People can pet our dogs when they ask.

Yes, great advice. It's horrible that it's come to this.
