| help!!! My new baby is coming on Jan.11th. He's a 10 week old male yorkie, my son has named him COdy. I am so afraid, I owned one ShihTzu like 12 years ago and gave him away because I was young and had absolutely no idea how to train a puppy. Fluffy was the alpha in that home!!! Poop and Pee everywhere, way gross. Anyhow, the other day I made the mistake of going into a pet shop with my kids to just "look". Needless to say, Cody just yanked on my heart strings. First yorkie, I am terrified!!!They are feeding him Science Diet, should I continue that? What shampoo do I use? How can I protect my rugs from accidents? Help, Help, Help, please? |

| don't worry you will need to crate train him before he is given free reign around the house. science diet is no good but wean him off of it over a 7 day period canadie, chicken soup, nutro natural, wellness, are a couple of good foods to try. get samples first to see which one he likes you can buy a belly bands for in the house until he is trained lil bit rach sells them,go fetch lots other on here just ask or look in the yorkie products under featured stores take him out often to go pottty, watch for sniffing on the floor or turning in circles THEY HAVE TO GO! gotta be fast give treats and praise when he goes potty minksheen has a good shampoo just google for website STRAT TRAINING TO SIT,LAYDOWN ETC... NOW!!! YOU CAN DO THIS WITH HIS FOOD INSTEAD OF FEEDING OUT OF BOWL AT LEAST FOR A BIT WHILE TRAINING and be patient it takes a while but the love and cuddles you get will be well worth the effort and also: get a book on dog training it will help you to no ends and of course we are here to help also look in the forums a wealth of information is at your finger tips.you have found one great place.

I would continue w/ whatever he is currently eating for a few weeks for a few reasons. Firstly, he's a bit younger than what most reputable breeders consider an appropriate age for placment. Secondly, regardless to WHAT your dog is eating, it's not a good idea to immediately try to change EVERYTHING they know IMO, he's already going to be going to a new home. Let him adjust first and then gradually swap the food over. Science diet is not the best food out there, but it's not the worst either. But remember, the food that is the best option for one person's dog may not be the best for the next. Research foods, ask for samples, try them and decide what is best for Cody. Supplement his diet as needed. Here is a good link to use to start your research...it directs you to several sites that compare foods and touches on home cooked and raw feeding as well. Just remember, all the sites are based on OPINIONS, so take that for what it's worth. http://www.consumersearch.com/www/fa...d/reviews.html As far as "accidents," some are bound to happen, no matter how careful and watchful you are. Just be consistant w/ potty training and eventually he'll catch on. Congrats! | |

| So, you're getting a puppy from a pet store, but, yet you have to go pick him up yet? If you haven't paid for him, I would back out..I'm not coming down on you, I know how hard it is, and it breaks your heart, but, you have to remember, puppies at pet stores come from puppy mills, a lot of them end up having a lot of problems on down the road, and some of the times, they're not even purebred. If you haven't paid, please back out and get one with a reputable breeder. If you do go through with this, and you decide to change him over on food, do it gradually..I know the vets around here all use science diet, I would ask your vet what he recommends. |

| The Loved Dog So much fun! Congrats on your baby! Buy the book The Loved Dog. It has tons of training tips and everything I have tried has worked so far.... I use an old play pen with pee pads in my basement cause it's so cold here and i didn't want Sadie going out side till it warms up a bit. What ever you decide enclosed potty area works pretty good once they get the idea. I wouldn't change the food for at least the first week or two...Chewy got sick and had to be on boiled chicken and rice for the longest time! Just stick with what your puppy is on at first and let it get used to being in your home. I crate my pups at night and when I can't watch them, but i let them have lots of time to run and play also... i use a water bottle (Like a rabbit bottle) in the cage... They can have water when ever they want it, and it can't spill... works great! Get your baby checked by a vet as soon as you can after you get it home. Chewy was from a pet shop and was perfectly healthy but don't trust... get the clean bill of health from your vet and bring a stool sample. I go to the second hand store and get a few things they need and it's cheaper... Plates for their food. (they are so small they can't always fit their heads in the dog bowls! baby blankets are great to pad the cage, lay on the bed or couch while they are sleeping with you...(in case they pee!) Baby toys, are great! I get stuffed animals that have sewn on eyes.. rattles. Anything that doesn't have things that can be torn off! I have small baby lunch box that I bring Sadie's canned food and water in with a cold pack when we travel.

| If you have carpet and your afraid of accidents in the house, a hand held carpet cleaner (30.00 at walmart or target) are great and quick, even kids can help, so even if there is an accident your carpet doesn't get stained *just clean and empty it frequently or it smells* I do agree if you haven't paid for it yet, back out, pet store puppies can have many more issues because they aren't coming from a reliable source. Obviously not to sound mean, but your children and you will become attatched. If you are doing this I wish you the best of luck, be patient with 'cody' if you get overwhelmed dont' be afraid to come here and ask for help. As for the food, I am NOT a fan of science diet, every dog likes differant things, but i would say get a food for small puppies, but SLOWLY mix it in with the science diet to transition him. Get some puppy toys for him and thing to chew. Get a book about training yorkies, my husband and I got the complete idiots guide to yorkies and it helped us tons with our first one! Good Luck!

| Welcome to YT. Wow, Cody is going to rock your world. This is a wonderful breed, and yes I would say the highest maintenance. Cody will also give you so much love in return. Small package with a big personality. ;-) Rocky was my first yorkie and he rocked my world. I'll try and make this as brief as possible of the key items needed. - Good Yorkie Book on the breed and caring for one - Bring home the blanket or toy he's had with him - Appt with your vet the day you pick him up (appropriate tests done) - Microchip him ASAP, tags, and buy a harness & leash - Plan to gradually move him to a high premium dog food - Kennel/crate (must be cozy for him) - XPEN and or baby gates (short term play area...can be laundry room) - Pee Pads w/waterproof backing Best advice my breeder gave me was to keep his area small, and then gradually increase his space. The laundry room is where I have a good size kennel for my two yorkies, large pee pad and their food/water. I have a baby gate in the door way. When Rocky was a puppy, even though he was crate trained there would be lots of accidents. These were mostly my fault for not seeing the signs. From my experience, in the beginning always take him outside or place him on the pee pad after eating, drinking, playing, etc. Get him use to that ASAP. When you see the signs, take him out or to the pee pad right away....Praise him and give him lots of love when he relieves himself. I have two children and two yorkies. Yes, I can say yorkie puppies are way more work than a newborn baby. Last, but not least, decide who is going to take what shift.....These puppies normally cannot make it through the night without a potty break. In the beginning his crate will need to be within ear shot of someone who will hear him whimpering to be let out at 1:00 AM, 3:00A.M. Congrat on becoming a yorkie mommy. |
