| Yorkie Saved From Burning Home By Chris Paschenko The Daily News Published January 1, 2008 LEAGUE CITY — The loving nature of a tiny dog trapped in a house filling with smoke likely saved its life Monday when a crawling firefighter became the object of its affection. Emergency 911 dispatchers received a call at 10:04 a.m. from a passer-by, reporting smoke coming from 2660 Milburn Drive in a gated neighborhood of South Shore Harbour Country Club. Firefighters arrived six minutes later, finding two cars parked in the driveway and began searching the home for occupants. Bryan Holmes, a district chief with the League City Volunteer Fire Department, and fire inspector Dave Gill said the department’s timely response saved the Yorkshire terrier’s life and the house from extensive fire damage. “With the house charged with smoke, one of our firemen at floor level found the dog,” Holmes said. “It came up and licked him on his face mask, and he got him out. Another crew member had seen him, but the dog ran.” Ray Thomas smiled when asked about rescuing the dog. “That’s just one of those miracles — there was heavy smoke,” said Thompson about not being able to see the dog until he was face-to-face with it. “They usually don’t do too well in that kind of smoke.” Holmes said the dog required no immediate medical attention, such as oxygen, and no injuries were reported after firefighters searched the two-story home and found no one inside. “There was no one home when the fire started,” Holmes said. “It was contained to the first floor and there was minimal fire damage but smoke damage throughout.” Gill said the dog was taken to Safari Animal Care Centers and could have gone home with a relative of the homeowners. Gill said the cause of the blaze remained under investigation. “It was a good stop,” Gill said. “The fire department limited the damage to the kitchen area. At this time, it’s still unknown what caused it, but we’re not ruling anything out. We’re trying to narrow the origin to the stove countertop.” Gill said the city disconnected utilities, such as gas and power, to the home and that the blaze displaced a family of three. The family would likely stay with relatives, Gill said. |

| What a fortunate yorkie. Fire has always been my greatest fear - probably because my house caught on fire twice between the ages of 2-11. I feel so for these people. How awful to be gone & have your pets caught in a fire - scares me to death.

| One of my fears is something like that happening and not being there to save Gypsy. What a lucky dog.
