| AKC question... If a dog is registered with AKC does that mean that the dog has no health problems or genetic diseases? I had someone tell me that they have to be in good health, genetic disease free in order to be registered with AKC, or CKC... Is this true?

| The only thing AKC registration guarantees is that BOTH parents were also registered AKC with full registration (rights to breed). You have to do your homework on typical genetic problems and how to interview a good breeder. Both of my dogs are AKC. Sammy will need to have surgery on her knees and Loki is on 2 medications for a disease that is genetic and he has had it since birth. So, papers are NO guarantee. On the flip side, a good breeder is *most* likely to register AKC. Show-quality pups will be registered with AKC or comparable kennel club (they are not all equally respected).

| My Yorkie is registered with AKC and I wasn't sure about what I had been told I didn't think is was true because some disease occur later on in life. I do know that his parents and his grandparents were all healthy! I worry so much about things like that. I just want him to be healthy....

| It does not guarantee anything about health. Most of the dogs in puppy mills are AKC registered and they are notoriously unhealthy. Do you breed yorkies? |

| No, I do not breed. I have no idea how to begin to start breeding. I just wanted to know if what I was told was true about the AKC dogs being completely healthy. I didn't get my puppy from a pet store or puppy mill, he came from a very well know breeder here in Ky. I got to see the parents and grandparents that he came from and they showed me papers where the dogs had been tested for all these problems. I was talking to someone who thought they knew what they were talking about and they really didn't. (I'm sure you know those type) I would never breed dogs without the proper knowledge, because I don't want to put any animal of anykind in danger just because I don't know what I am doing.....

| Nope, it doesn't mean they are healthy at all. All it means is that the parents of the dog (or at least the 2 dogs claimed to be the parents) were registered as pure bred dogs. |

| He came from a couple that has been breeding for, I think she said 15 yrs. All of the puppies are keep in her home, she doesn't sell them until they are 12 weeks old they are socialized with until you pick them up. They are all AKC registered they come with a health guarantee, certified pedigrees, and the vet records. My mom got a Yorkie from the same people about 3 yrs. ago and my aunt has 3 that came from these people they are 10, 6, and 4 all of them are very pretty dogs and in great health. So, my family is very familiar with the breeders and recommended them highly to me... They also breed poodles and yorkie-poos. I am glad there are honest people like that still in the world.

| So true, most people do not understand that Hunt Corporation (largest puppy mill company) has a hugh % of their puppies AKC registered.
